Studio Visits / Interviews: Rowdy

Rowdy is perhaps best known for his crocodiles, which stalk the urban landscape with a quiet menace, and his cast of other characters which abound with abrasive energy. But the Bristol-based artist’s abstract landscapes, which can be read as both highly political but also deeply personal, represent a far more reflective and contemplative side to his work. An entire building is depicted by an individual mark such as the smudge of a fingerprint, the stroke of a paintbrush or the squirt from a spray-can and […]

Showing: Sweet Toof & Rowdy – ‘Drifters’ @ See Studio

Editor’s note: This post was guest written for AM by Alex Ellison. Having seen Alex’s photography captures of the work by these two prolific street artists over the years, and his expert knowledge of the historical context of their work, there seemed like no-one better than Alex to cover this exhibition for us even though we’d made the trip to London to see the exhibition ourselves…  Last weekend saw the opening of Drifters, a joint show of new work by Sweet Toof and Rowdy, following on from […]

Previews: Sweet Toof & Rowdy – “Sweet Summer Solstice” @ The Looking Glass

Next week, two graffiti artists we follow here on AM come together for a two person show in Bristol. Rowdy and Sweet Toof need no introduction as their jams have been seen on the world stage for years individually, together as a twosom,e and also as part of their former guise within the Burning Candy crew. Sweet Summer Solstice opens on the longest day of the year, June 21st at Bristol arts venue The Looking Glass, with an opening party serving Sweet Toof punch and Crocktails. The exhibition runs […]

Openings: “Wider than a postcard” & olive47 – “bonita bonita” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Breeze Block Gallery opened their huge group show Wider than a postcard (previewed) alongside the first solo show in their new gallery 2 space – olive47’s bonita bonita (featured) a couple of weeks back to a packed Portland crowd. Over 400 individual works went into the postcard show with 200 artists providing postcard sized works. The work was hung on the walls in grids of 24 cards, each echoing the aspect ratio of the individual works themselves as each work was 6×4 inches. The variance of work encompassed photography […]

Previews: “Wider than a postcard” @ Breeze Block Gallery

On the back of his Space//Form group exhibition last year (covered), Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis is working with Breeze Block Gallery in Portland again on another huge group event entitled Wider than a postcard. With over 200 artists and 400 individual works, this exhibition looks to be both bigger than the previous event and also smaller at the same time as all of the artworks are postcard sized at 6×4 inches. Each artist is either making work on a found / owned postcard and adapting / adding […]

Streets: London Instagram Roundup

Sweet Toof seems to be the unintentional focus for AM this week.  Seeing his work on shutters, walls and wheels he certainly has been getting about.  Definitely a favourite, was seeing his new piece on Bethnel Green Road with Brooklyn graffiti artist, Smells, a real winner. A nice addition to the trackside was added by Rowdy next to some great rollers by Horror. There was more painting again this week from Malarky, collaborating either with Billy, Mr Penfold or Sweet Toof, always a pleasure to […]

Openings: Burning Candy – “A Fist Full of Paint” @ Tony’s (London)

Last week, AM went along to the opening night at Tony’s, London, to grab some pics and get a feel of East London’s Burning Candy exhibition A Fist full of Paint.  Knowing the exterior had been brilliantly tagged with a paint filled fire extinguisher, it was good to see the interior had been done in the same style. The floor and the walls had all been touched by the western style showdown paint fight that had taken place. This was recreated throughout the night […]

Streets: London Instagram Roundup

I have been kindly asked by the nice guys here at AM if I would like to submit a weekly street art article from my Instagram feed. Without hesitation I accepted… For those of you who haven’t heard about Instagram, it’s an app on the iPhone where you can upload and share pictures, so all photos are taken with the iPhone. I mainly focus on the streets of Shoreditch and areas of Hackney, London, taking photographs of new and old streetart. So, here goes, I […]

The Burning Candy crew – Cept, Cyclops, Dscreet, Gold Peg, LLB, Mighty Mo, Rowdy (interviewed), SweetToof and James Jessop are making a film called “Dots”, which follows each of the artists on their travels around the world as they visit the cultures they have found inspiration from. In order to fund the film, BC have kept it strictly DIY, and are releasing a limited edition box-set of nine prints. Each box-set gives the owner a […]

Update: Banksy’s unique Nola print for The Rowdy Rooftop Burner Auction

Following the recent fire where graffiti artist Rowdy lost just about everything he had, the “Rooftop Burner Fund” benefit auction kicks off this week on the 24th of June. If you missed our interview with Rowdy last week you can catch it here and check out some background information, plus check details of the auction and images of some of the work generously donated by some of Rowdy’s friends and fellow artists on the organizer’s Steal from Work’s website. Sure to bring in lots of attention, the […]
