Jen Stark for “40 Under 40: Craft Futures” @ Smithsonian

Expert paper sculpture artisan Jen Stark recently had one of her pieces acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum for their permanent collection. The psychedelic multicolored piece which looks like it is dripping down the wall is entitled Power of Being and is part of the 40 Under 40: Craft Futures exhibition currently underway at the Renwick Gallery part of the institution which also includes a piece from Olek (mentioned earlier). Last week, New York’s New Museum opened a new exhibition entitled Ghost in the Machine. The survey contains over 140 works of art by over 70 artists which explore the relationship between humans, machines and art. Taking over all three main gallery rooms, it providee a unique look at the digital age and its influence/interaction on the artistic movement. Openings: Skullphone – “London, XX12” @ Ivory & Black

A couple weeks ago, the Ivory & Black in London opened their Skullphone showing entitled London, XX12. Featuring a new body of work created with his special technique utilizing dots and layered clear coats, the continuing series initially looks like digital LEDs from a distance – a reference to the street artist’s claim to fame – his digital billboard takeovers. Also included were some sculptures based on molds of his feet as well as some associated items. Discuss Skullphone here.

Sculptor and photographer Jason deCaires Taylor recently made his premiere at Jonathan Levine Gallery with a solo exhibition entitled Human Nature. The British born artist who grew up with the coral reefs of Malaysia is known for taking his talents of altering environments to the ocean. Utilizing specialized PH neutral materials, Jason creates cement based sculptures and lays them in nature’s aquatic settings to create artificial reefs. Previews: Friends With You – “Happy Rainbow” @ TMTP Cultural Center

Miami artist collective FriendsWithYou will have their next exhibition open overseas in Hong Kong this coming Saturday (July 22nd). Happy Rainbow will be their first solo show in Chinese territory and will premier at the TMTP Cultural Center. In San Francisco, no other local artist draws a crowd quite like Jeremy Fish. Just this past Saturday night, the Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles hosted Go West, a joint show between Kris Kuksi and David Ellis curated by Joshua Liner that is a followup to the Go East exhibition that was hosted at their New York last May where the two galleries roles were flip-flopped. For his part, Kuksi brought along several of the large mixed media assemblages that he is famous for. This Saturday, July 14th sees the opening of Jeremy Fish’s (featured) solo show at Fifty24SF. Entitled Where Hearts Get Left, the new body of work to be presented is a testament to the the Bay Area-based artist’s love for San Francisco. As such, the imagery presented is thematically tied into local references including Native American legends, food spots, tourist attractions, historical details, and more all rendered beautifully in his signature style including his use of sculptural motifs. Openings: Colin Christian – “Hello, Pretty Pretty” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Over the weekend, alongside new work from RISK, the talented Colin Christian (interviewed) put a selection of his sculptural creations on display at the Corey Helford Gallery. Much like his showing in Texas earlier in the year (covered), the new body of work collectively entitled Hello, Pretty Pretty featured a mix of free standing figures and wall mounted faces, all produced in Christian’s signature cyber-erotic aesthetic.
