Streets: World Roundup (Sept 2018)

It’s been a long while since our last Streets World Roundup but we felt like sharing so here’s a look at some recent street art. Headlining things is this clever series of handpainted sequential billboard takeovers from Mobstr (interviewed). Not sure where these pieces are located, but presumably in the UK somewhere. Wherever they are, the text-based work is a prime example of his wittiness, talent for placement, and minimalistic aesthetic. Other public art that caught our eyes last month include pieces from JR (Germany), AlfAlfA (Spain), Andrew […]

The exhibition is an historical overview of his career to date, showcasing the evolution of his body of work spanning three decades – from politics, commercial messaging, subversion, social constructs, environment,  to war and peace – but also showcases many of Fairey’s artworks reflecting the profound influence […]

Co-designed with the artist, this model is part […]

Previews: BEYOND THE STREETS (Los Angeles)

On May 6th, BEYOND THE STREETS will open its doors in Los Angeles (1667 N Main St), an immersive survey of graffiti and street art, the likes of which haven’t been seen since Art in the Streets (covered) in 2011. This is not surprisingly seeing as Roger Gastman was an associate curator of that show back then at the MOCA, and will be the main curator of this new exhibition. Working with a roster of over 100+ artists, 40,000+ sq. ft. of industrial indoor and outdoor space has been converted […]

Upcoming: BEYOND THE STREETS (Los Angeles) – Curated by Roger Gastman

In 2011, Roger Gastman was an associate curator of Art in the Streets, the first major US museum (at MOCA) survey of graffiti and street art. As one of the world’s foremost authorities on these art forms and movements, he returns to curate a groundbreaking follow-up to the show, called BEYOND THE STREETS. The spectacular exhibition will include over 100 artists (including perhaps one very big surprise one?) showcasing paintings, sculpture, photography, and installations (including a re-creation, in partnership with adidas Skateboarding, of the famous Venice Pavilion), on more […]

Streets: Vhils x Shepard Fairey – “American Dreamers” (Los Angeles)

Last July, when Shepard Fairey (featured) held an exhibition at Underdogs in Lisbon, of which Vhils (interviewed) is a cofounder, the two got together for a sweet collaborative mural (covered). This week, it’s Vhils who will be opening a show in Shep’s home base of Los Angeles and once again the two renowned street artists have pooled their efforts on a stunning new piece at Mack Sennett Studios in Silver Lake (with the support of Branded Arts). It’s always interesting to see how the Portuguese artist’s unique mark-making blends with more traditional methods […]
