POW WOW ’13: Nychos x Jeff Soto Mural

After a relaxing week in Hawaii filled with art, great food, and friends we haven’t seen in awhile, it’s time to share with you photos of some more of the murals that went up for POW WOW 2013. One of the collaborative pieces that seemed to work well for this year’s event was from Nychos and Jeff Soto (interviewed). With both artists who have some of the more painterly techniques there, the combination of their imagery meshed quite nicely on this large wall. Discuss POW WOW here. […]

Check out some more photos below of the festivities as well as some of the participants and people involved in this year’s event including Nychos (seen above) who painted mural […]

Openings: José Parlá – ‘Broken Language’ @ Haunch of Venison

AM attended the opening of José Parlá’s Broken Language exhibition at Haunch of Venison in London last week, his first show in the UK since his significant and heavily calligraphic Adaptation/Translation exhibition back in 2008. Was it worth the wait? Hell yes. Having only had chance to see the majority of Parlá’s recent work vicariously via the internet since the Elms Lesters show, we – like many other UK fans of all things Parlá – awaited this new body of work with a strong sense of […]

We’ll be bringing you a look at many of these pieces soon, starting first with an epic collaboration between Dabs Myla, 123Klan, Slick, Askew, and Roid. The long wall deep in the Kaka’ako district will add much needed color to the area, and highlights a seamless meshing of styles from these artists hailing from different parts of the world. Check out more detailed […]

Take a look at some of these shots from her studio and head out to the opening if you want to meet Haslam as she will be flying in for the show. Discuss Melissa Haslam here.

Openings: JR @ Watarium Museum (Tokyo)

We recently gave you a sneak peek at French “photograffeur” JR as he worked feverishly to set up his first solo museum exhibition at Tokyo’s Watari Musuem of Contemporary Art. This past weekend, the show opened to a enthusiastic reception by the people in Japan. Highlighting his Inside Out project, which incorporated the residents from North East Japan (where the tsunami hit in March 2011), JR went big as he always does and wheat-pasted the exterior facade of the museum. On the inside, we saw a diverse […]

POW WOW ’13 (Part I)

With POW WOW 2013 in full swing, AM made the rounds yesterday to check out the progress as murals were going up all around the Kakaʻako district in Honolulu. Some of the artists featured at work in this first set of photos include Jeff Soto, Nychos, 123Klan, Angry Woebots, Dabs Myla, Madsteez, Shark Toof, Katch, Slick, and Rone & Wonderlust – who are collaborating on the mural seen above. The day of art was finished up with a series of talks at the University of Hawaii. […]

Openings: Jean-Michel Basquiat @ Gagosian (New York)

Jean Michel-Basquiat was born in December of 1960 to a modest household in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of 5, he was (like most kids) heavily inspired by cartoons and began to sketch out his own. In his adolescent years, although very gifted intellectually (fluent in 4 languages by the age of 11), he became socially awkward, withdrawn and subsequently rebellious. When he was 15, Basquiat dropped out of high school and began running the streets, often seeking the shelter of a New York […]

Openings: Rostarr – “Turbo Arena” @ Anonymous Gallery

Last week, New York artist Rostarr (featured) unveiled his latest body of work in Mexico City at Anonymous Gallery. This inspiring series of paintings entitled Turbo Arena draws from his hypnotic signature style that is a smooth mash-up of iconography, graphics & calligraphy. Ro took our breath away with a jaw dropping 80 foot installation that he hand painted all by his lonesome. This show is up through the end of March, so if you’re fortunate enough to be in Mexico City, do yourself a favor […]
