Releases: Shok-1 x Bally Collection

With the help of tastemaker Swizz Beatz, Bally recently launched a new capsule collection with artwork from Shok-1. Known for his unique x-ray aerosol technique, the British artist recently traveled to Japan and Hong Kong (seen above) to promote the release of a selection of sweatshirts, joggers, totes, fanny packs, sneakers, and hats for both men and women. Upcoming: Hajime Sorayama – “Sorayama Explosion” @ NANZUKA

On July 7th, NANZUKA in Tokyo will be hosting the opening of a new solo show from Hajime Sorayama. Entitled Sorayama Explosion, the exhibition will feature paintings as well as a new human-scale sculpture from the Japanese artist known for his “sexy robot” motif. Also available will be a few held back Sorayama Classic Robot SURF sculptural editions from APPortfolio (seen further below) and a new ceramic sculpture edition from Case Studyo entitled A Touch of Mercury (seen directly below). Openings: Tomoo Gokita – “Peekaboo” @ Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery

Last night, the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery presented a comprehensive new show from Tomoo Gokita entitled Peekabo. Featuring various-sized pieces made since 2000 as well as 10 all new paintings, the exhibition provided a nice overview of the Japanese artist’s recent work including surreal paintings with oftentimes obscured faces, some family-style portraits, as well as a large-scale installation, which incorporates over 800 small drawings. Previews: James Jean – “Azimuth” @ Kaikai Kiki Gallery

After an earlier peek at the exquisite stain glass works for James Jean’s (interviewed) solo opening tomorrow night (April 6th) in Tokyo at Kaikai Kiki Gallery, here are some more tantalizing looks at the new body of work entitled Azimuth. Openings: KAWS @ Galerie Perrotin (Tokyo)

Last night, AM stopped by the Tokyo branch of Galerie Perrotin to catch the opening of KAWS’ solo show, his first of two in Asia with Hong Kong coming up. Attended by his Japanese admirers (some from his Original-Fake days), international superfans, and the usual cast of locally-based artist friends, the opening showcased the Brooklyn-based artist’s newest pop culture character-based abstractions including a sweet Snoopy airplane shaped painting.Take a look at more photos from the opening reception below… Discuss this show here. Upcoming: James Jean – “Azimuth” @ Kaikai Kiki Gallery

On April 6th, James Jean (interviewed) will be opening a new show in Tokyo at Kaikai Kiki Gallery. Continuing to work with Takashi Murakami to present his work to Japanese collectors (see 2015), the American artist has prepared a series of new works collectively entitled Azimuth. Upcoming: Yoshitomo Nara – “Drawings: 1988-2018 Last 30 Years” @ Kaikai Kiki Gallery

On February 9th, Yoshitomo Nara will be opening a show at Takashi Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki Gallery in Tokyo. Entitled Drawings: 1988-2018 Last 30 Years, the exhibition looks to be a retrospective of the Japanese artist’s drawings as well as the beginning of the gallery’s representation of Nara seeing as they will also be hosting a solo booth of his work at Art Basel Hong Kong in March.
