With Armory Week 2018 being in full swing this weekend in NYC we keep getting reports of new shows, releases, openings and some interesting behind the scene stories from the fairs. Basel Week Switzerland ’15: VOLTA

After bringing you a look at SCOPE Basel, we now turn our attention to the VOLTA. Moving back to the center of the city at the venue Markthalle, their 11th year at Basel Week Switzerland sees the art fair continuing to focus on mainly solo exhibitions from artists at their gallery booths like Mark Stone for The Hole Gallery (seen above). Armory Week ’14: Volta

One of the satellite fairs we visited first during New York’s Armory Week is Volta. This unique event does not showcase a sampling of a diverse roster of artists like most booths, but instead the invited gallerists select one artist to focus on. This results in a memorable way to keep the viewer’s attention as they run through the aisles focusing on one gallery and discovering a single artist at a time. Photo credit: AK for Arrested Motion.

Armory Week ’12: Volta Show – First Look

Continuing our Armory Week coverage we move on to Volta. This fair is the little brother to the main Armory Art Show (here & here). For Volta, selected galleries don’t exhibit various artists from their roster, instead they focus on one artist to showcase at their booth. This rule kept our head spinning to a minimum, but nonetheless the visual talent had our eyes dancing around the whole time. Check it out after the jump.

Volta ’11 – Jim Houser @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s entry to this year’s VOLTA art fair during this year’s Armory Week was artist Jim Houser. The Philly-based artist was in full effect as he brought a beautiful collection of fresh works that spanned an array of sizes and mediums. Much like his last show at Subliminal Projects, Mr. Houser took time customizing the booth with his unique installations including his custom soundtrack. Check it out after the jump.

Another great artist to be featured at this year’s VOLTA fair’s solo format was Richard Colman (interviewed). Represented at Copenhagen’s V1 Gallery booth, the San Francisco based artist impressed us with a diverse selection of his signature colorful and geometric works. Check it out after the jump.

VOLTA was a fair during Armory Week that had each gallery bring a single artist to feature. LA’s Carmichael Gallery showcased the talents of street artist Mark Jenkins. The Family Room booth housed many great sculptures from Mark that had fair attendees constantly stopping with double takes when encountering his eye catching pieces. Check it out after the jump.

We continue our coverage of Armory Week ’11 with Volta NY . Volta sets itself apart from other art fairs by exhibiting galleries that have each elected to show only one artist. This selection of solo shows makes for a more consistent and intensive art viewing experience as compared with other fairs, which is always engaging and challenging. Volta NY is a relatively young fair that sets out to put the focus back on the artists, by presenting a highly selected group of solo shows. With each booth only allowed one artist, attendees are able to get a better, more rounded representation of each artist’s work.
