Although already open to the public as of a couple days ago, the Boston ICA will be celebrating the start of the Os Gemeos exhibition (previewed) today with a waterfront launch party, complete with Caipirinhas, Brazilian street food, and DJs who will take visitors to the heart of the artists’ native São Paulo. For those lucky enough to be in Beantown, make sure you stop by the main mural at Dewey Square (former site of Occupy Boston near South Station) where the twins have painted one of […]
Having a good friend like James Jean (featured) certainly came in handy for one lucky couple as the LA-based artist was asked to design special wedding invitations for them. It looks to be fabricated in a similar fashion to the stunning wood piece he created for our City Of Fire show based on the union of two animals from the Chinese Zodiac – the ox and snake. Discuss James Jean here.
Tomorrow night (August 3rd) in Denver, the Black Book Gallery will host a three person show from Shepard Fairey, Evan Hecox, and Jim Houser. The Mile-High City last saw Shep’s work at Manifest Hope during the 2008 Democratic National Convention, but if the art community has forgotten, the OBEY crew has been up and about putting up reminders with stickers, stencils and wheat pastes. Discuss Shepard Fairey here.
Next week, August 10th to be precise, the Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle will be hosting the opening of their fourth annual Lush Life group show (see 2011, 2010, and 2009). Again, the list of artists include many that have been featured here before on the pages of AM like Camille Rose Garcia, Chris Berens, Madeline Von Foerster, Travis Louie, Glenn Barr, Ti Kunkit, Seamus Conley, Sam Wolfe Connolley, Laurie Lee Brom, Lindsey Carr, Jessica Joslin, Michael Alm, Handiedan, Peter Ferguson, Zoe Williams, and more. Take […]
Last night, Hennessy held the Los Angeles premiere (see NY launch here) of the VS cognac bottle designed by Futura at an exclusive launch party held at the Milk Studios in Hollywood. The special bottle is a continuation of the brand’s collaboration with high profile artists (see KAWS) and it seemed that no expense was spared with Diplo and Santigold on hand to entertain the crowd. Of particular interest to fans of the graffiti legend though were various originals on display as well as a live painting session. Also on hand […]
After a short hiatus, the David B. Smith Gallery will be hosting a new group exhibition tomorrow night (August 3rd) that touts an intriguing lineup of artists. In addition to new works by returning artists Molly Dilworth, AJ Fosik, Ryan McLennan, Regan Rosburg, Paul Jacobsen, Dena Schuckit, Cole Sternberg, and Jason Thielke, the showing also features excerpts from John Houck’s Aggregates series, a captivating oil painting from Jonathan Viner (seen above), a portrait by Mark Dean Veca of the infamous Mr. Hankey, of South Park fame, new work […]
A couple days ago, we shared with you the mural that DALeast painted for the Wall Therapy Festival in Rochester, New York. His partner in crime, Faith47 was also on hand as she painted her own wall for the event. The piece is entitled Rhapsody and features the religious iconography that is often seen in the South African street artist’s work. More detailed photos below… Discuss Faith47 here.
While in town for the 40 Under 40: Craft Futures showing at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Olek decided to gift the city with one of her signature yarn statue takeovers (here & here). This time she yarn-bombed the 12-foot tall Albert Einstein statue on the grounds of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington DC. Check out more in-progress shots of her and her assistants at work below as well as the finished photo. Via My Modern Met. Discuss Olek here.
On August 11th, the Corey Helford Gallery will be hosting the opening for Brandi Milne’s latest show. Entitled Before I Hide Away, her third solo at the Culver City showspace will feature her most revealing and personal body of work to date (see more about this on her blog). A selection of fourteen paintings will be on display, each part of a series about moving forward and following one’s heart, despite life’s challenges. She states – “My aesthetic for this show is a little different than […]
On many occasions in the past, where you find Italian street artist Blu putting in work, you will see his equally gifted compatriot Ericailcane getting up as well. The Desordes Creativas Festival in Spain is no different (see Blu’s piece here) as the “Eric the Dog” has produced a mural in his narrative style featuring what look to be the prey revolting against the “king” bird. The gifted street painter certainly has a way of composition and style that makes the viewer wonder what part of an epic tale […]
Our midweek Art Focus is on an artist new to AM – Nigerian-born, American artist Toyin Odutola. Using only pen and ink on paper, the tools of her trade create a novel look to her portraits which explore ideas of race and refers to skin as geography and terrain where she uses to draw on their individualities and experiences. She is currently in a group show at the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico entitled Afro: Black Identity in America and Brazil “highlighting work by three Afro Brazilian artists […]
Ekundayo (interviewed) recently sent word of a print release from 1xRUN. The new limited edition entitled Mother To Another Dimension will be produced in a run of 50, sized at 14″ x 26″, and cost $75. Even more exciting – each one will be hand-finished. He states – “Most ideas for my work start with a conversation or a person close to me that inspires a thought that builds the foundation for a new painting or creation to take shape. I believe we are all searching for […]
