At the Pulse art fair, we were constantly running into new and wonderful art work. One of the artists that we were fortunate enough to discover was Laura Ball who showed with both Morgan Lehman Gallery and Kopeikin Gallery. Her primary technique is the use of watercolor with her main subjects being animals and her family members. We found her precision with the dreamy watercolors to be really attractive and one thing that stands out is her use of the blending and bleeding of her watery pigments […]

Dubbed “The Invisible Man” and for good reason, Chinese artist Liu Bolin gets his kicks by painting himself into the background with some urban camouflage. His work is a silent protest against his government for it’s persecution of artists. He says – “Some people call me the invisible man, but for me it’s what is not seen in a picture which is really what tells the story. After graduating from school I couldn’t find suitable work and I felt there was no place for me […]

Opening on January 8th at La Luz de Jesus, is Jennybird Alcantara’s first show for 2010, featuring a brand new body of work. As seen from the piece above combining the underwater and spacial realms, Alcantara likes to explore the interconnectedness of the natural world, painting the flora and fauna she loves – sometimes from taken from fairytales, fables and mythology. So… It seems that one of the pieces Banksy put up last week has a back story that most didn’t know about. Apparently, he stenciled over a 1985 piece by Robbo and other writers who were some of the pioneers of graf in London in the mid 80s. This has caused a pretty strong outrage among some old school graffiti writers and it looks like Robbo has gone back to paint over the piece, cleverly incorporating Banksy’s piece just like Banksy incorporated his. AM dropped by Corey Helford Gallery’s Multi-Plane Show opening (previewed) to see how the finished pieces turned out. The gallery came up with the show’s “Multi-Plane” theme by borrowing the idea from past animation techniques where scenes were created using multiple cell layers. As we mentioned in our preview, each of the featured artists were given a kit of different transparent panes to work on that are overlaid on top of each other to give the final painting more depth and richness. Take a look […]

Many of you may remember the video that Saber produced for the “Organizing For America’s Health Care Reform Video Challenge” (if not, take a look after the jump). Although he was demonized by some of the media for “defacing” the American flag, anyone with a little common sense would see his painting as an “interpretation of the American flag being overwhelmed by the language of his personal struggle with our country’s system of medical care.” Battling epilepsy himself, the graffiti artist felt he had to […]

By now, most of you have seen the four new Banksy pieces that went up last weekend in north London. Art of the State recently posted up a quick video walkthrough that takes your past all the stencils which gives you a nice perspective into the locations that the Bristol Bomber chose for each piece. Discuss Banksy here.

When we previewed Yoko Tanaka’s show that ends soon at David B. Smith Gallery, it didn’t register how large some of her paintings actually were until we saw some opening pics. It’s always nice to have some perspective – in this case – into the soft, delicate, and refined new body of work from Yoko who attended the show in person.  More images  after the jump…

Following up on our extensive coverage of this year’s Art Basel Miami, AM is proud to present the last of our posts on one of the country’s most exciting outdoor mural projects: Primary Flight.  With an all-star roster comprising of this year’s lineup, it was near impossible to be everywhere at once, catching every tag, stencil, wheatpaste, throw up and mural.  We were able however to catch up with some pretty heavy hitters on our last day in town…. artists such as Mear One, EWOK, Tristan […]

Currently showing at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum is a major exhibition from gunpowder artist extraordinaire Cai Guo Qiang. As you can see in the video above, Qiang demonstrated his explosive technique by creating some of his signature pieces (also seen in the “Stages” show) in person. Far from a one trick pony, Qiang brings with him a body of work similar to what we witnessed at the Guggenheim in New York last year with his “hanging car” installation, “headlong rush of wolves” installation, “sunken […]

We previewed Ryan McGinley’s works in this year’s Art Basel Miami previously, now prepare yourselves for pictures from Team Gallery’s booth at the fair.  No matter how you picture in your heads how the photographs from small compressed jpegs look framed and in person, it can not prepare you for how fantastic they truly look.  McGinley’s photographs were impressive in imagery, color, and size, going up to 108 inches.   According to Jose Freire, owner of Team Gallery, McGinley is meticulous in his perfection.  He […]
