Eric Firestone Gallery in East Hampton is currently hosting the Positivilly Marvillainous group show, a title borrowed from the smart word play of George Herriman, the creator of the Krazy Kat comic. The power of comics and cartoons, and the way they represent characters and tell the story is the main theme of the show. The idea that “still, simple and sophisticated characters tell our stories better than a complicated plot,” resulted in an exhibition that champion the character itself.

The show features works by established and up and coming artists such as Bäst, Ellen Berkenblit, Mike Bidlo, Rosson Crow, Ted Gahl, George Herriman, Chris Johanson, Ray Johnson, Sean Landers, Austin Lee, Dan McCarthy, Joyce Pensato, Dave Sayre, Kenny Scharf, David Shrigley and Devin Troy Strother.  Showing wide range of mediums and techniques, from Bast’s mixed media works, Scharf’s spraypaints, McCarthy’s clays, Shrigley’s ink drawings, Sayre’s sculptural installation, to different types of oil, acrylic, or collage works, “each artwork delineates the tradition of character development and demonstrates an acute understanding of human nuances and expressions.” The show opened on July 5th and will stay on view until July 27th.
