Los Angeles gallery, Blythe Projects, currently holding it’s inaugural Culver City show, featured an artist that drew AM’s attention, whose work we’ve actually been enjoying for the last year or so. “Cloudcookooland” is the first solo show in LA for Mark Schoening (featured on this month’s cover of American Contemporary Art magazine) since he moved to the city from New York last year.

Schoening’s explosive work captures frozen moments in time, and this new show is inspired & informed by his recent relocation. He describes the work in ”Cloudcookooland” as an ‘unrealistic state where everything is seemingly perfect; yet the truth remains, instability and chaos have become the norm’. Sounds just like LA to us!

The show features a number of mixed media wall pieces using acrylic, latex, ink, carbon transfer, spray paint, completed with a resin coating that gives a multi-layered and multi-tonal depth to the work, plus this stunning looking sculpture (seen above) comprised of wood, latex, steel eyelits, thread and spandex completing the installation.

The show is currently running, with an artist’s reception to be held on Saturday April 10th. Check out some more pictures after the jump.
