Contest: Pedro Matos – “Therefore the King” Print

Lisbon based street artist, Pedro Matos, recently released a limited edition print (details here) of his painting “Therefore the King”. If you remember, the piece was first seen in his solo show at the Montana Shop & Gallery back in June (covered). Pedro has graciously decided to giveaway one the AP’s for this print to one of our readers. Just leave a comment at the end of this post or on our facebook on what your interpretation of the crown in the painting is and Pedro will choose a winner by Sunday, August 29th.

More images of the print after the jump…

Sometimes, some people have the capacity to rule over life. Experience, love and authenticity beyond normal. They can capture the look in your eyes and disclose the other who that you are. They are your fingerprint and shadow at the same time. They are kings of existence, kings without a throne.

Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

I live on the streets, there is no one who can tell me what to do & what no to do. I eat what i want & when i want, i sleep where i want & when i want & i do what ever i want to do. I see everyone with love even if no one looks at me i am the one who watches everyone on the street. And i am the king of my street.

  • Aaron

Loving and giving love out to the world, he has conquered and is a king, even if only for a moment.

    Beautiful piece!

The winner is Jon Hanlon on Facebook as chosen by Pedro. He posted this entry on our wall separately:

I interpret the crown as being a symbol of seniority. Pedro’s pieces for the most part are about homeless people in Lisbon or decaying in society. It’s a unique way of putting a stand on who this man really is, rather than how he is viewed upon in society. This man could have been the King, bu…t he has fallen. Now, he is left with noting but the cold and hollow reality of the homeless lifestyle. It may also be a play on Anthony Lister’s idea of who our heroes are now a days. It may be as if he is the true king and role model guy, meanwhile there are many others who in Pedro’s opinion don’t stack up to him(due to his genuineness, seniority, experience and knowledge). He has been looked down upon, and his crown no longer is actually a true piece of himself anymore, physically and emotionally. He has been shadowed and frowned upon based on modern society’s actual interpretation of a modern day “King”. He once was crowned upon, now he is frowned upon.

    Thanks to everyone who participated.
