Showing: Pedro Matos – “Less Than Objects” @ Underdogs

Currently at Underdogs in Lisbon, a show from Pedro Matos is on view through April 2nd. Less Than Objects continues a line of work that the Portuguese artist last exhibited at the end of last year in Milan (covered) that are rendered mostly on linen canvases. Some of the abstract textures painted by the Matos seem to mimic the beautiful decay and imperfections seen in urban settings, not surprising when taking into account his time spent on the streets as a young artist. Previews: Pedro Matos @ Miguel Justino Contemporary Art

Later tonight (March 19th), Pedro Matos will be opening a self-titled solo in Miguel Justino Contemporary Art’s project room in Lisbon. Continuing his foray into abstraction, the new works are influenced by the urban landscape – the “ephemeral and decaying, the withered and downtrodden” – something that has been consistently an influence for the Portuguese artist since his early beginnings on the streets. Four Seasons is a new solo exhibition by Pedro Matos featuring four new oil paintings. Openings: “Space//Squared” @ White Walls Gallery

Last month, White Walls Gallery in San Francisco opened a group exhibition entitled Space//Squared. Curated by Sven Davis, the showing was a followup to an event last year in Portland (covered). The Portuguese coastal town of Cascais near Lisbon recently saw the opening of Europe’s first hotel-managed arts district inside a recently renovated Renaissance-era fortress, run by Pousada de Cascais Cidadela Historic Hotel. Their “Arts District” project invited six artists for a year-long residency, during which their studios as well as five new art galleries will be open to public.
