One week ahead of his upcoming solo show at Lawrence Alkin Gallery in London, we got a peek at the new work that Tom French created for the show. Transcend is an entirely new set of paintings that will be on view at the gallery from April 22nd until May 21st.

Evolving from his Duality series, the new paintings continue to incorporate figurative elements and the artist’s signature use of illusion. Stepping more towards abstraction, the new work can be interpreted on multiple levels. From close up details consisting of representational figurative elements, to the expressive abstract level, all the way to the overall macro view, different people will see different things and read the images in their own ways. This concept comes from French’s fascination with the relationship between the conscious and subconscious where figurative elements represent the conscious, and the abstracted portraits representing the subconscious.
