Showing: Tom French – “Transcend” @ Unit London

Opening this weekend at Unit London, Transcend is a retrospective of Tom French’s work following his tragic passing. Featuring two of the locally-based artist’s bodies of work – the Duality & Parallax and paintings – the exhibition is a tantalizing and bittersweet look at how far the talented creative had come and a hint at the direction he was heading. French’s calligraphy-like compositions oftentimes had an illusory component, perhaps the most famous of which were his skulls in the Duality series that were composed of images within images. […]

Showing: Tom French – “Paralax” @ Unit London

On the 1st of June, Unit London opened a new exhibition of work by Tom French (featured) titled Parallax. Through this show, the London-based artist explores the literal, metaphorical and metaphysical manifestations of perspective and visual perception through his expressive monochromatic works. Stepping away from his previous work that used illusion and double images, French is this time focusing on the apparent displacement of his subject matter and its relation to the viewer. With this in mind, he snatches his figures, preserves them in oils with photographic clarity and incorporates them within abstract […]

Updated: solidARTy.org (II)

We recently got an update from solidARTy.org that they are started another round of charity art auctions on their website. The project launched back in November by auctioning artworks donated by artists, galleries and studios, with 100% of the proceeds going to AreYouSyrious.org organization. So far they have raised over €20,000 for the cause and are now continuing their efforts by offering more original and rare, editioned work by world renowned street, urban and contemporary artists. Along with some of the pieces that didn’t sell previously, the […]

Previews: Tom French – “Trascend” @ Lawrence Alkin Gallery

One week ahead of his upcoming solo show at Lawrence Alkin Gallery in London, we got a peek at the new work that Tom French created for the show. Transcend is an entirely new set of paintings that will be on view at the gallery from April 22nd until May 21st. Evolving from his Duality series, the new paintings continue to incorporate figurative elements and the artist’s signature use of illusion. Stepping more towards abstraction, the new work can be interpreted on multiple levels. From close up details consisting of representational figurative elements, to […]

Openings: “Space//Squared” @ White Walls Gallery

Last month, White Walls Gallery in San Francisco opened a group exhibition entitled Space//Squared. Curated by Sven Davis, the showing was a followup to an event last year in Portland (covered). This time around, participating artists were again asked to contribute artwork in a 10 x 10″ format.  Along with pieces from over 100 artists (list seen below), Adam Friedman and Robert Minervini also created a site-specific installation featuring a series of paintings interspersed throughout mural elements. Roster: 2501, Adam Friedman, Adam Weir, Akiko Masker, Alex Lukas, Alicia Dubnyckyj, […]

Upcoming: Tom French – “Duality” @ C.A.V.E Gallery

This Saturday night, the last day of August, the C.A.V.E Gallery in Venice, California will be opening a new show from Tom French (featured). Featuring a series of paintings that followup the skull paintings we enjoy so much, the new faces the UK-based artist has been working on also have more depth than meets the eye on first glance. Take a closer look below at the detail of these Duality paintings and you will see what we mean. Discuss this show here. Discuss Tom French here.

Openings: “Wider than a postcard” & olive47 – “bonita bonita” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Breeze Block Gallery opened their huge group show Wider than a postcard (previewed) alongside the first solo show in their new gallery 2 space – olive47’s bonita bonita (featured) a couple of weeks back to a packed Portland crowd. Over 400 individual works went into the postcard show with 200 artists providing postcard sized works. The work was hung on the walls in grids of 24 cards, each echoing the aspect ratio of the individual works themselves as each work was 6×4 inches. The variance of work encompassed photography […]

Previews: “Wider than a postcard” @ Breeze Block Gallery

On the back of his Space//Form group exhibition last year (covered), Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis is working with Breeze Block Gallery in Portland again on another huge group event entitled Wider than a postcard. With over 200 artists and 400 individual works, this exhibition looks to be both bigger than the previous event and also smaller at the same time as all of the artworks are postcard sized at 6×4 inches. Each artist is either making work on a found / owned postcard and adapting / adding […]

Openings: “Space//Form” @ Breeze Block Gallery (Part 2)

Following directly on from Part 1 of our coverage of the busy Space//Form opening, AM now delves a little deeper pictorially into the artwork created for this huge group exhibition of 110 artists with a series of pictures where the art is more viewable (like the Mark Dean Veca installation above). To recap, all of the participating artists were given an identical 10×10 inch cradled timber panel by exhibition sponsor Ampersand as the medium to work on. The exhibition curator, Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis chose a brief […]

Preview: “Space//Form” Group Exhibition @ Breeze Block Gallery

As the opening of the Space//Form group exhibition draws ever nearer, and following on from our studio view, AM brings you a glimpse of some of the work in this huge show. Over 100 artists are participating in the exhibit, which opens on 6th September at Breeze Block Gallery in Portland. The artists were each given the same brief and the same materials to work with and asked to explore and represent their interpretation of space and form within either the natural or built environment. Each piece of […]
