We just wanted to let you know about an interesting project on display this October at La Luz de Jesus – the Lowbrow Tarot Project curated by Aunia Kahn. She has invited 22 other great artists including Kris Kuksi, David Stoupakis, Chet Zar, Laurie Lipton, Brian Viveros, Scott G. Brooks, and Jennybird Alcantara to create artwork inspired by the 22 major Arcana of tarot cards, each representing an aspect of human emotion. Wow! Looks like Brian Viveros is raising an army of chain-smoking ladies for his upcoming solo at Thinkspace Gallery in October. The new body of work entitled “Dirtyland” will feature what Viveros does best – beautiful and rugged women smoking, carrying weapons, all mascaraed up and ready to do battle. Representing the 808, Edwin Ushiro brings his lush paintings infused with island imagery to the Roq La Rue Gallery on September 10th. “Preceding Sunday” will be a collection of works from the Hawaiian native filled with nostalgic elements from his childhood, all created with his unique technique giving his paintings a ethereal and almost glowing effect like the piece above – “All Signals Configuring to a Position Seeping from Words Either Unspoken or Intangible”. Our friend Amanda recently posted up an image of Andrew Hem’s (interviewed) sketchbooks, scattered gloriously about with pages open revealing this and that. In essence, these gouache “sketches” are mini-paintings and a selection will be available from LeBasse Projects at next month’s Art San Diego Contemporary Art Fair. As a whole, the work is a summary of Andrew’s many travels as he stops occasionally to paint a scene that impressed him for one reason or another. Via Erratic Phenomena. Discuss Andrew Hem here.
