Openings: Survey Select

Last Thursday night, San Diego got a rare dose of great art courtesy of Mark Murphy. The long time collector, curator, publisher, and friend to artists put together another impressive group show, this time entitled “Survey Select”, held at the Wonder Bread Factory. The well attended event kicked off a great July for Los Angeles’ southern neighbor with Viva La Revolucion and SDCC 2010 still coming up. More pics after the jump…

Strewth! Our favorite Aussie couple Dabs Myla have teamed up with Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) and Jersey Joe aka Rime to produce a collaborative print edition entitled “Look What’s In My Pants”. The print image is based upon the mural that AM saw the quartet laying down on a hot day at the end of May in Los Angeles. Those Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed) brooches that made us the envy of all our art friends are finally available as a general release this Saturday, July 17th at 3 pm (Pacific Time). Originally released only to attendees of Baby Tattooville 2009 (where we got ours), these momentos will be limited to 1200 from Audrey’s website were you need to register in order to by one. On Saturday night, Travis Louie (featured) premiered his latest body of work entitled “Curious Myths” at Joshua Liner Gallery. Opening along with peer Sylvia Ji (covered), this show was another consistently detailed and creative endeavor that we come to expect from Mr. Louie. Going big was no problem for the master monochromatic painter as we saw some rather large and extraordinary pieces from the New York native. This past Saturday, AM attended the opening of Sylvia Ji’s (interviewed) “Las Adelitas” at Joshua Liner Gallery. The solo exhibition is Sylvia’s first in New York (previewed). Showcasing her signature Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) portraiture style, she honed in on the theme of “Las Adelitas”: the female fighters of the Mexican Revolution. What do you get when you mix Natalia Fabia’s (interviewed) “Hooker DreamEscape” imagery with Lolita fashion, Domo-kun, kaiju, geishas and other Japanese cultural phenomena? The answer is her stunning new body of work – “Fashionable Aftertaste Without End”. The “East meets West” opening party on Saturday night at Corey Helford Gallery featured a 450 pound specialty chandelier, plenty of appropriately costumed guests, and of course incredibly detailed paintings full of life, color, and Kawaii.
