Streets: Jeff Soto in London (Part 2)

As part of our continuing coverage of Jeff Soto in London, AM went to check out what Jeff was up to on the day of his opening at StolenSpace where we found him in nearby Corbet Place putting up his second piece on the streets. He’d started off blocking the piece out the day before and we were there to capture a few images of the work as it went up. Take a look at all of the pictures of this plus three more unseen […]

Openings: Souther Salazar – “Last Year’s Man” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Souther Salazar opened his show “Last Year’s Man” at Jonathan Levine Gallery last weekend with a huge body of quality works. We were completely overwhelmed by the various mediums/media that entranced our senses. Known for his melancholy characters that seem simple at first glance, further inspection reveals a veritable “world within a world” complexity. Souther seemed to have the audience in mind when creating his works, as there was literally something to appeal to almost every art enthusiast. There were large wood panels, a video […]

Openings: Brian M. Viveros & Matthew Bone – “Southern” @ Last Rites Gallery

Last Rites Gallery, which bills itself as a home for artists that prefer to explore the darker side of their imagination, serves as the perfect backdrop for “Southern,” (previewed) the two-person solo show featuring the work of Brian M. Viveros and Matthew Bone currently on view at the gallery. At AM, we enjoy art that touches a nerve with viewers and garners strong reactions – this show certainly fits the bill. The crowd at the opening was delighted by the raw and uncut exploration of […]

Openings: Art Hong Kong 2009 International Art Fair

Continuing AM’s tour of Hong Kong, we made a stop at the Art Hong Kong International Art Fair. This vanguard Asian fair brings together top notch exhibitors from over 110 galleries. Much like our visits to Basel Miami and Armory NYC, in Hong Kong we experienced and saw work from some of the best talents in the art world. It was exciting to have such a collection of premium artwork centralized in one place. Check out all our exclusive coverage after the jump.

Openings: Jeff Soto – “Inland Empire” @ StolenSpace

Jeff Soto (interviewed) opened his UK solo show to a packed house at StolenSpace yesterday. Soto’s arrival in London had certainly stirred up lots of fans eager to meet him and see his work in person for the first time. AM was on hand to take some shots and spoke to people who had traveled from all across the UK to be there. They were rewarded with a strong, cohesive set of paintings, ranging from small to huge in size, with the largest measuring 5′ […]

Openings: Marion Peck – “Ladies and Clowns” @ Sloan Fine Art

Our friend, Travis Louie (interviewed), who just opened up a show of his own, sent us some pictures from the opening of Marion Peck’s “Ladies and Clowns” last Wednesday night at Sloan Fine Art.  This primarily new body of work mostly sold-out and featured paintings as well a video.  Take a look after the jump…

Openings: Allison Sommers – “A Brief History” & Joao Ruas – “Inner Myth” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Whoever coined the phrase “beauty is in the details” certainly knew what they were talking about. The two bodies of work currently being shown at Thinkspace Gallery, “A Brief History” by Allison Sommers (interviewed) and Joao Ruas’ “Inner Myth” certainly live up to this age-old saying. AM thoroughly enjoyed Sommers’ whimsical world and the intricately painted creatures that inhabit it and we were equally impressed with Fables cover artist Ruas’ mythology-inspired pieces. Get a detailed look at the work and see the rest of the photos […]

Update: Audrey Kawasaki’s Laser Cut Brooch

A little while back, we gave you a glimpse of a laser cut brooch that was to be released from Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed).  Well, it appears that some were sold at her Space Yui show in Japan and one, much to Audrey’s displeasure, has even made its way onto eBay. What is even more disturbing is the fact that the auction lists the brooch as being sold out when in fact this item is not even limited in edition and will be released for $35 […]

Streets: Jeff Soto in London (Part 1)

AM spent some more time with Jeff Soto (interviewed) as he was preparing for his upcoming solo at StolenSpace (previewed) this week. We were on hand to take pictures of the first of his street pieces in London. Soto was a graffiti writer back in the day around the Los Angeles and Riverside area before he concentrated on his endeavors in the studio and hadn’t taken to the streets in almost 10 years. Based on the quality of this piece, we certainly think he should get […]

Preview/Interviews: Jeff Soto – “The Inland Empire” @ Stolenspace (London)

Jeff Soto makes his United Kingdom debut this week with his solo show entitled “The Inland Empire” (teased) opening Thursday, May 14th, at Stolenspace. AM caught up with Soto ahead of the show to try and understand how the show came together, the symbolism and meaning behind his new work and how fatherhood has changed his career as an artist. Read the entire interview and see some sneak peeks of the work after the jump. Note: The interview contains use of strong language.
