Armory Week ’11: Scope

Armory Week’s merry go round of satellite fairs would not be complete without the inclusion of Scope. Held at a large warehouse facility on the west wide of the island, the location reflected the grass root and creative vibe that gave us numerous sound related installations and a really gaudy ode to decadence. Oh, did we mention that there was an artistic experiment that featured five fraternity boys stuck in a box for four hours with nothing but a window, a microphone, cases of beer, […]

Armory Week ’11 – Independent Fair

After enjoying the change and chaos of the inaugural Independent fair last year (covered), we made sure to return this year when making our Armory week rounds. And we were glad we did. Although the Independent can feel somewhat chaotic because of its lack of walls to designate individual booths, the art presented tends to be much edgier and less commercial than that shown at many of the other fairs. Even so, we were able to find a lot of work that we enjoyed, some […]

Video/Armory Week ’11 – David Ellis Wins Pulse New York 2011 Prize

Over the weekend, members of the Pulse Prize selection committee made the exciting announcement that this year’s Pulse Prize would be awarded to David Ellis. Ellis—represented by the Joshua Liner Gallery in the fair’s Impulse solo project section—exhibited a varied collection of sculpture, video and installation, including True Value (Paint Fukette), an animatronic assembly of paint buckets orchestrated to create a complex drum beat. Ellis will receive a $2,500 cash grant and the opportunity to design the bag provided to VIP guests at the 2012 […]

Armory Week ’11: First Look at The Armory Show

New York is a lot of work… especially when the Armory is in town – the busiest week of art in North America after Basel Miami of course. We caught the VIP preview to bring you a detailed first look at the flagship Armory fair. You’ll definitely see many blue chip names, but to our delight we also found many new comers. Check it all after the jump.

Armory Week ’11 – KAWS @ Honor Fraser

Tondo… That was the word of the week that Honor Fraser taught us about their Armory booth featuring Kaws. Tondo is the term for the round canvases which dazzled passerby’s at the blue chip art fair. At the center of the showcase, an impressive “Tondo Wall” was created using 21 round canvases. Each piece featured a different expression set in a distinct minimalist fashion and together the installation worked to convey a possible sequence or gamut of emotion. Conceptually, it seems that Kaws is integrating […]

Teaser / Setup: Armory Week ’11 – Jim Houser (Jonathan LeVine booth @ VOLTA)

Showing with Jonathan LeVine at the VOLTA satellite fair (also see Mark Jenkins & Richard Colman) at this year’s Armory Week will be Jim Houser. Judging from all the setup action we see, attendees can look forward to very nice installation which is typical for the Philadelphia-based artist (ie last year’s Subliminal Projects show).  AM loves his quilt-like blocks of imagery and look forward to seeing new symbology added to his lexicon.

Teaser: Armory Week ’11 – Richard Colman – “Can’t Get There From Here” (V1 booth @ VOLTA)

With Armory Week in New York set to start tomorrow, we wanted to let you know about a couple more artists to look out for.  Take a look at this floor piece for an install Richard Colman (interviewed) has planned for the V1 booth at VOLTA. If you remember, it looks like the same one he used for his immersive show at Guerrero Gallery back in October. Keep it locked on AM of course as we will be bringing you on-site coverage of all the […]

Preview: Armory Week ’11 – Rebaroque Artist Series Sound Wall @ Scope New York

A special project taking place at this year’s Scope New York art fair is the Rebaroque Artist Series Sound Wall, a collaborative audio/visual installation featuring Rebaroque sound panels—art and design objects created from vintage fabrics and frames that include speakers through which you can play sound or music from an iPod or other device. Curated by the multi-talented Lori Zimmer, the Sound Wall will consist of unique pieces from a selection of 20 artists, including Tara McPherson, Ellis G, Gaia, Ian Kuali’i, Jonathan Viner, Mr. Kiji, Sharktoof and […]

Teaser: Armory Week ’11 – KAWS @ Honor Fraser

In the first extensive display of work since his Paris solo last fall, Pay the Debt to Nature (covered), Brooklyn-based artist, KAWS, will only need to send his work over the bridge this time, destined for Honor Fraser’s booth at The Armory Show. The street art icon turned contemporary art mainstay will offer a solo presentation of his pop-infused minimalistic work with the Los Angeles gallery, including a collection of new paintings – like a series of abstract “button”-like round panels – as well a […]

Teaser: Armory Week ’11 – Mark Jenkins – “Family Room” @ Carmichael Gallery (Volta)

Continuing our look at this year’s upcoming Armory Week in New York, we turn our attention to the Carmichael Gallery who will have a booth at the VOLTA satellite fair. The LA gallery will be presenting Family Room, a installation of new sculptural works from Mark Jenkins converting their space into an unconventionally furnished family room which will in turn be his commentaries on the institutions of family and home. Discuss Mark Jenkins here.
