Basel Week Miami ’14: Wunderkammern @ SCOPE

With Basel Week Miami in the rear view mirror, AM will now take time to highlight some of the individual artists and booths that caught our attention. One particular gallery’s offerings that we quite enjoyed at SCOPE (covered) was from Rome’s Wunderkarmmern, especially Mark Jenkins’ (interviewed) clever sculptural work (seen above). On display were also Aakash Nihalani’s geometric musings and Dan Witz’s street based pieces. See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here. Discuss Mark Jenkins here. Discuss Aakash Nihalani here. After providing readers with our first set of images from the Art Basel Miami Beach 2014 fair, we provide you with a second and final glimpse of what was in store for visitors of the prestigious “main event” during Miami fair week. Highlights included Amanda Ross-Ho and Brent Wadden’s impressive work (featured above) at Mitchell-Innes & Nash, Jamian Juliano-Villani and Van Hanos at Tanya Leighton, Michele Ables at 47 Canal, and Julia Wachtel at Elizabeth Dee. Basel Week Miami ’14: Aqua

Another fair we visited while in Miami was the tenth edition of Aqua. Featuring emerging and mid-career artists, the unique setting was a classic South Beach hotel that opened its rooms to collectors and exhibitors for the duration of Basel Week Miami. One of the pleasant surprises we stumbled upon was the piece seen above from Travis Louie (interviewed) that sees him using color for the first time in his signature series of works (exhibited by William Baczek). Basel Week Miami ’14: NADA

In Miami, the second must-visit fair right behind the Art Basel Miami Beach fair every year is NADA Miami Beach. Focusing on younger galleries and artists, NADA typically contains more surprising finds and new discoveries. Located in the historic Deauville Beach Resort, it included 36 exhibitors this year. Works ranged from art stars such as Israel Lund, Mary Weatherford, and Jon Rafman, to newer ones, such as Darja Bajagić, Mike Bouchet, and Peter Sutherland. Basel Week Miami ’14: Pulse

While in town for Basel Week Miami, we made sure to head north a little ways to attend the Pulse held at their new location – Indian Beach Park. The tenth edition of the  event featured some familiar names as well as many artists new to us. One of these was the sculptural works of Jorge Mayet (seen above) at the Galeria Horrach Moya booth. Enjoy more photos below form the fair… See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here.

Basel Week Miami ’14: Untitled.

Focusing on emerging and midcareer contemporary art (over 200 exhibiting artists from 18 different countries), the Untitled. satellite fair was back for Basel Week Miami with their tent situated nicely on the beach. Featuring natural lighting and a nice layout, the walk through the booths and artwork was quite enjoyable. Take a look at some photos below… See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here.

Basel Week Miami ’14: SCOPE

One of the favorite fairs we visited during Basel Week Miami was SCOPE and its high concentration of art from the Low Brow, New Contemporary, and Street Art movements. Featured at the fair were pieces from the Dean Collection (from collector Swizz Beatz), a new sculptural piece (based on recent print) from Cleon Peterson in the entryway, an installation from Swoon, a Juxtapoz stand, and Heineken House live painting. Here are some photos to give you a taste of what was seen at the fair including this amazingly […]

Basel Week Miami ’14: Damien Hirst @ Paul Stolper Gallery

Mirroring an exhibition (covered) several months ago at the Paul Stolper Gallery in London was a display of Damien Hirst’s oversized pharmaceuticals at their Art Basel Miami booth. The Schizophrenogenesis works consist of sculptural renditions that are an extension of his pill cabinet pieces as well as his fascination with the medical field as well as screen prints. See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here. Discuss Damien Hirst here.

Basel Week Miami ’14 / Openings: Art Basel (Part I)

After flying into Miami, AM headed straight to the main fair to see what the new year had to offer at Art Basel. With over 250 of the world’s most prestigious galleries participating and over 70,000 visitors each year, the sheer amount of art certainly cannot be encompassed in one article. Here is part I of our coverage with some snapshots of things that caught our eye like the impressive Urs Fischer installation at the Sadie Coles HQ booth mirroring the exhibition at the end of […]

Basel Week Miami ‘ 14 / Releases: Barry McGee Beats Pill

One thing the AM team will be sure to try and pick up during Basel Week Miami is this sweet collaboration between Barry McGee and Beats By Dre. McGee further states – “I have always been fascinated with the ‘weed culture’ within popular culture as a whole, but for some reason, I […]
