Previews: “ELYSIUM” @ Thinkspace Gallery

This Saturday evening (November 10th), Thinkspace Gallery will be opening a group show featuring Audrey Kawasaki, Atsuko Goto, Fuco Ueda, (seen above), Jolene Lai, and Stella Im Hultberg. Following in the vein of previous all women exhibitions (see 2007 & 2011) at the Los Angeles showspace, ELYSIUM will highlight the talents of the five artists, who all share a penchant for paintings strong female protagonists as well as an Asian background which informs their work. Previews: Atsuko Goto – “The Silence of Idols” @ Thinkspace Gallery

On March 4th, Thinkspace Gallery will be hosting a solo show from Atsuko Goto in their project room. Entitled The Silence of Idols, the works from the Japanese artist features faces cloaked in flora & fauna and inspired by the Shinto belief that “nature is animated by divinity and sacred spirits harbored in every living and inanimate thing.” The haunting images are creating with a unique selection of diluted pigments made from lapis lazuli, ink, and gum arabic applied to cotton. Upcoming: Atsuko Goto – “An Empty Idol” @ Lower Akihabara

Tonight (September 9th) in Tokyo, Atsuko Goto will be opening a new solo show at Lower Akihabara. Entitled An Empty Idol, the exhibition includes ethereal mix-media paintings from the locally-based artist featuring her signatures portraiture which draws inspiration from the Shinto religion. The subjects of the Japanese artist’s imagery are in tune with nature with birds, butterflies, flora, and animals nesting and interacting with their hair and faces. Discuss Atsuko Goto here.

Art Focus: Atsuko Goto

Continuing our Art Focus series of articles, we now turn your attention to the work of Atsuko Goto. Working with a soft and ethereal touch, the Tokyo-born artist’s imagery draws inspiration from the Shinto religion where divinity manifests itself in multiple forms: rocks, trees, rivers, animals, places, and even people. Created with glue, pigments, gum arabic, Lapis-lazuli on cotton, the hazy and dreamlike nature of her work can be partially attributed to her choice of mediums. Via Hi Fructose.
