Openings: Aya Takano – “Heaven Is Inside Of You” @ Galerie Perrotin (Hong Kong)

Last week, Heaven Is Inside Of You opened up at the Hong Kong branch of Galerie Perrotin featuring all new works from Japanese sensation Aya Takano. The new series of paintings and drawings feature colorful dreamscapes surrounding her androgynous characters, some of which show them exploring different countries. The current output on display from the Kaikai Kiki disciple was influenced by her experiences after the catastrophic earthquake and resulting disasters in Japan.  She states: “Until I experienced the earthquake, I was living a life that was fairly pleasant. […]

After her showing at the Perrotin space in Paris during the summer (covered), Aya Takano will be following up with a solo at the Hong Kong location. Opening tomorrow (or tonight for fans in the Asia timezones), Heaven Is Inside Of You is a collection of paintings featuring her slender child-women characters dressed in traditional wear and floating through the landscapes of different continents. Like many artists from Japan, the catastrophic earthquake that struck last year has deeply affected Takano. She states: “I have, since then, as if unearthing them […]

Teaser: Aya Takano – “To Lose Is To Gain” @ Galerie Perrotin (Paris)

Coming up on June 23rd, Galerie Perrotin in Paris (Saint Claude location) will be opening To Lose Is To Gain, a new solo show from Aya Takano. The Japanese artist and former assistant to Murakami will be bringing her signature style of anime-influenced juxtaposition of natural forms in urban settings. Heavily influenced by her childhood readings of the natural sciences and science fiction, the work melds these interests with the techniques of the Superflat movement. Discuss Aya Takano here.
