Art HK ’11: Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin

As you knew from our teaser article, we were looking forward to the Emmanuel Perrotin booth at Art Hong Kong because of what KAWS had to offer.  But, turns out the gallery was showing many other artists from their roster including AM favorites like Takashi Murakami, Mr., Chiho Aoshima, and Aya Takano among many others. Art HK ’10: Aya Takano

Another artist that we were looking forward to seeing at Art HK 10 was Murakami protege, Aya Takano. The Japanese artist, whose show we also covered in NY, was exhibiting at the Emmanuel Perrotin booth and has been one of the highlights among strong sales at this year’s Hong Kong Internation Art Fair, apparently selling several of her pieces to Chinese and Korean collectors. More images after the jump…

Openings: Aya Takano – “Reintegrating Worlds” @ Skarstedt Gallery

Last Saturday night, Upper East Side’s Skarstedt Gallery hosted the opening of one of the most exciting shows so far this art season – Japanese pop-art star Aya Takano’s “Reintegrating Worlds.” The exhibition, which is Takano’s second solo with the gallery, consists of a brilliant collection of 15 new paintings filled with fantastic scenes of waifish girls and all kinds of animals. Contradictions abound in the work, most importantly in the figures, which are at once sensual and childlike. Among the champagne-sipping, gallery-goers was hip-hop […]

Teaser: Aya Takano – “Reintegrating Worlds” @ Skarstedt Gallery

Another pretty big show is going down this week in New York at the Skarstedt Gallery. Japanese sensation Aya Takano will be opening her first solo show in NY on November 5th entitled “Reintegrating Worlds,” and you best believe AM will be eagerly on hand to take in her new body of work. We suggest you do the same as the Murakami protege will be bringing fifteen new paintings stateside for your enjoyment. Famous for her sometimes controversial “kawaii-erotic” aesthetic, Takano reinterprets traditional Japanese imagery […]

Frieze Art Fair

Frieze Art Fair takes place every October in Regent’s Park, London and this year, over 60,000 people step through the doors to take in all the art on display. There were signs of renewed confidence in the market as there appeared to be increased buying in the under $1 million range, but higher priced works still were not moving well. The good news for those who were only there to window shop last week was the fact that there was plenty of nice art to […]

Video: Aya Takano Documentary

We recently saw this short documentary on one of our favorite Japanese artists, Aya Takano.  She discusses her early influences including her childhood readings, the encouragement of Takashi Murakami, Yayoi Kusama, and the um… orgasm of science fiction.  She also discusses the different reactions to her work, often depicting playful and subtly erotic young girls. Part 2 after the jump…

Preview: Saturday @ Phillips NYC

Last night, Phillips De Pury in New York City held a special preview of the lots from their Saturday sale coming up this weekend. AM loves Saturday @ Phillips because of its increased accessibility compared with other higher-end contemporary auctions, which are typically held on mid-week afternoons and evenings, making them difficult for most working people to attend. In addition, Phillips Saturday sales are known for a wide range of items, including a great selection of urban, street and other emerging art, as well as […]

Preview: Ai Yamaguchi @ Roberts & Tilton

Along with Aya Takano and Chiho Aoshima, Ai Yamaguchi was one of the young, up-and-coming female Japanese artists involved in Takashi Murakami’s Tokyo Girls Bravo exhibition in 1999. Unlike the other two, however, Yamaguchi severed her connection with Kaikai Kiki and went her own way. Since then, she has done quite well for herself, showing her Japanese animation-style depictions of Edo-period geishas at galleries around the world, publishing beautiful silkscreen prints and collaborating with the Japanese cosmetics brand Shu Uemura. This Saturday, Yamaguchi will be […]
