Video: Bristol Museum Vs. Banksy

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

Don’t we all wish that we could take a quick trip up to Bristol to catch the madhouse of artistic antics known as “Bristol Museum Vs. Banksy“? Well, one of our good friends from San Francisco actually made a special trip to the UK just to spend a weekend soaking in all the Banksy goodness, taking the time to make this rad video that captures the spirit of this amazing show. This video not only documents the details inside, but also some of the iconic outdoor “bombs” from the Bristol Bomber himself. Close-Up: Banksy’s Studio Installation @ Bristol Museum

Monday, June 15th, 2009

In our last article, AM showed you some great pictures of Banksy’s latest show in Bristol from the special preview night. Sir Banksy demonstrated that he could create a show that seamlessly weaved his witty “street-cred” with the pompous realm of high-society. Considering the limited time we had to enjoy the show, we went back on opening day to bring you a closer look at the mock-up of Banksy’s actual studio. Read on after the jump…

Opening: Bristol Museum Vs. Banksy

Friday, June 12th, 2009

AM has some great pictures from the opening of Banksy’s summer show “Bristol Museum Vs. Banksy” (previewed) and is excited to share them with our readers.

Visitors to the show had very little idea what to expect, but Banksy pulled out all the stops with his new work and integrated older pieces flawlessly. Those familiar with Banksy’s work will recognize several reworked pieces that have been seen in the past as well as a re-contextualized NYC “Pet Shop and Grill.” What stands out most however, is the quantity of new work in the show.

There are at least 70 new works in the show that have never before been exhibited. What’s most striking about the overall exhibit is how appropriately it fits inside the museum. His work is no longer out of place: it belongs. Clearly every detail of the installation was meticulously planned as much of it is site-specific. Even the gift shop full of Banksy’s books and other street art related paraphernalia seems to fit right in.

More analysis and all the pics after the jump…

Preview: Banksy Exhibition @ Bristol City Museum

Friday, June 12th, 2009

In his grandest-scale project ever, “Banksy versus Bristol City Museum,” Banksy has installed over 100 works inside Bristol Museum, including an estimated 70 brand new, never before seen pieces. Work ranges from classic Banksy pieces to brand new sculpture, canvas and animatronics like those seen last in the NYC Village Pet Store show.

A bit about what fans can look forward to: The lower floor features Banksy’s work exclusively and a re-versioned “pet shop.” Elsewhere in the museum, Banksy’s work is mixed in with the “classical” works. Also on display is a complete mock up of Banksy’s studio.

Closed for just two days while the museum staff was told there was filming going on, Banksy kept the installation secret from all but a few insiders and the Museum Director up until the very last minute. The most amazing part about all of this is that the show was funded entirely by Banksy, not museum funding.

Check out the teaser video above and see the complete details and a video walk-through of the show after the jump…

Update: Banksy “Summer Show” @ Bristol City Museum?

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Looks like the resourceful people over at Bristol Street Art have perhaps confirmed what has been suspected to be the location of Banksy’s surprise show - Bristol’s City Museum on Queen’s Road.  They went as far as taking a picture through the small gap in the front doors.  According to them, it looks like something Banksy did in 2007 in Glastonbury.  Apparently a private viewing ”may” be held on the 12th of June with a public viewing starting on the 13th of June (usual museum opening hours 10 am – 5 pm).  Nothing 100% confirmed yet, but with the location, content, and time matching, it seems more than likely the info is spot on.  Plus, it’s sounding highly suspicious that the museum will be closed on the 11th & 12th when they are usually open 7 days a week (stated on its website).
