Art HK ’12 – First Look

With China’s rise to economic prominence comes an opportunity for the art community to further expand into this region. That’s where Art HK comes in as the 3rd iteration aims to make its mark on the world. After its recent acquisition by industry leader Art Basel, the fair is bigger and more prestigious than ever with over 265 galleries located on two floors of the famous Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Hong Kong has long been the historic city where east meets west, so it’s only natural that [...]

This Tuesday, Phillips de Pury & Company will be holding their more-accessible Under the Influence contemporary auction in New York. Among the lots are pieces by many of our favorite artists, including Chiho Aoshima, Marcel Dzama, Phil Frost, and Barry McGee. One notable lot is Portrait 5, Stephen(s), 2009–2010, a collaborative work by Shepard Fairey, Andres Serrano and Frank Stella, which debuted on the December 8, 2010 episode of The Colbert Report as part of an interview with Steve Martin and is now being sold [...]

Releases: Steve Powers and Chiho Aoshima for Absolut Vodka

Our friends at the art collectors have posted some info and images of an interesting collaboration between Absolut Vodka and two of our favorite artists, Steve Powers (featured) and Chiho Aoshima. Each artist has designed two drink pitchers to accompany bottles of the Swedish beverage, released in different sizes depending on country. Absolut has a long history of collaborating with many artists in the past such as Warhol, Haring, and more recently – Asbestos. Check out an animated video and additional images of the Aoshima [...]

Openings: “Sacred Monsters” @ Tufts University Art Gallery

We can’t be EVERYWHERE at once. Fortunately, AM has friends who enjoy art as much as we do. Last Thursday, Josh Liner played correspondent for us and trekked up to Boston to attended “Sacred Monsters” (previewed) at Tufts University Art Gallery. The show showcases some “young guns” of the Japanese art scene – Mr., Chiho Aoshima, Tomokazu (Matsu) Matsuyama’s (interviewed), Oscar, Kenjiro Kitade, Tokyo Kamen, Mahomi Kunikata, Nobuhiro Ishihara and Saito Oiwa. These eight notable mid-career artist have tackled numerous mediums with much success and Tufts [...]

Art Basel Vernissage

After only being able to spend less than an hour at the Art Basel Miami 08 vernissage preview Wednesday night, AM went back to the fair yesterday, and this time, we took our time. For those not familiar with Art Basel, it’s like walking through the world’s biggest museum of modern and contemporary art, except everything is for sale. There are far too many amazing works of art to mention – everything from Picasso to Rothko to Warhol to Richard Prince, so we thought that [...]

Preview: Ai Yamaguchi @ Roberts & Tilton

Along with Aya Takano and Chiho Aoshima, Ai Yamaguchi was one of the young, up-and-coming female Japanese artists involved in Takashi Murakami’s Tokyo Girls Bravo exhibition in 1999. Unlike the other two, however, Yamaguchi severed her connection with Kaikai Kiki and went her own way. Since then, she has done quite well for herself, showing her Japanese animation-style depictions of Edo-period geishas at galleries around the world, publishing beautiful silkscreen prints and collaborating with the Japanese cosmetics brand Shu Uemura. This Saturday, Yamaguchi will be [...]

New Mr. and Chiho Aoshima prints

Takashi Murakami‘s company, Kaikai Kiki, had announced the release of new limited edition offset prints by Japanese pop artists Mr. and Chiho Aoshima. As the announcement was made on Kaikai Kiki’s Japanese-language Web site, the details are not clear. AM believes that the sales will be conducted by lottery, and that the sign up for the lottery runs from today through October 12 (Japanese time). If you are lucky enough to be reading this from Japan or to know someone there who can hook you [...]
