Studio Visits: Nick Walker x Crash x Bio – “The Collaborations”

AM recently had the pleasure of stopping by the studio of legendary graffiti writer & artist Crash (featured) at his Bronx work space. Crash was not alone as Bio (Tats Cru) & Nick Walker (interviewed) joined him in one of many work sessions as the three artists prepared for their group exhibition featuring newly created artwork. As the title of the show indicates, The Collaborations builds on a concept which started over two years ago on the Lower East Side where Nick, Crash & Bio created a mural on Elizabeth street, […]

Over the course of several months, a select group of international artists were invited to secretly paint Hard Rock Stadium, helping to create one of the most unique collections of such work worldwide. Using the immense structure as their canvas or […]

Recap: Coney Art Walls

After a close look at the creation of three murals (Eine, Miss Van, Maya Hayuk) for the Coney Art Walls, we now have an recap of the event for you to enjoy. Curated by Jeffrey Deitch at an empty lot on Coney Island at 1320 Bowery on the west side of Stillwell Avenue (open 7 days a week), 30 artists were invited in to paint among food vendors chosen by Smorgasburg. Highlights for us was something from Futura (seen above) mirroring some of his photography work, a […]

Streets: Crash x Daze (New York)

As part of the continuing L.I.S.A Project in New York City’s Little Italy, Crash and Daze were recently invited to collaborate on a wall on Mulberry Street. For the two legendary NY writers, the mural was a natural extension of their friendship and professional lives as they share a studio together and were one of the first to make the jump from the streets to the gallery back in the 80’s. Take a look at more photos below… Photo credit: Joe Russo for Arrested Motion. Discuss Crash […]

Openings: CRASH – “Broken English” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

One of the summer exhibitions that we checked out recently was by Bronx-based graffiti artist Crash, a.k.a. John Matos (featured) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Entitled Broken English this freshly minted body of work spanned traditional mediums such as canvas and paper, but also highlights Crash’s dexterity as a graffiti master as he worked his painterly street magic to redo a Mini Cooper in his signature style & visual language. This great exhibition will be up until July 26th, so if you’re in NYC, this is a must see. Photo credit: Joe Russo for Arrested Motion. […]

Streets: Crash Mural on Bowery & Houston (Part II)

Earlier this week, we gave you a behind the scenes look of street artist Crash, a.k.a. John Matos (featured), as he worked the renowned Bowery & Houston wall. With the help of Tats Cru member BIO assisting on the cans, Mr. Matos powered through this fresh composition featuring the iconic cartoon character Popeye. Maybe a possible nod to Jeff Koons? Regardless, it’s impressive to see Crash turn his concept sketch on paper into a large scale reality.

Streets: Crash Mural on Bowery & Houston

After a great post-Sandy inspired mural by How & Nosm (covered), it’s time for a new artist to take on the iconic Bowery & Houston wall. Legendary graffiti and fine artist Crash, a.k.a. John Matos (featured), was tasked to put his hybrid street & Lichtenstein–inspired style on this marquee location for New Yorkers to admire. Pulling from his deep arsenal of urban experience, Crash lived up to his reputation as he hit the ground running. As you can see above from the concept sketch that he shared […]

Openings: “The Boneyard Project : Return Trip” @ Pima Art & Space Museum

Last weekend, the outdoor fields and indoor hanger Pima Art and Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona were the venues for the hand-painted vintage planes of The Boneyard Project: Return Trip. While the the DC Super 3 planes painted by How & Nosm, Nunca, and Retna, a C97 cockpit by Saner, a C45 plane by Faile, and a Lockheed VC 140 Jetstar by Andrew Schoultz were already stunning enough as centerpieces of the exhibition, when you include the nose cones, cockpits, and other plane segments painted […]
