Openings: “Unpredictable Gravity” @ Roq La Rue

Last week, a group show to benefit cancer charities opened up at the Roq La Rue gallery in Seattle entitled Unpredictable Gravity. Raising over 20K so far, the success of the show is due in no small part to the efforts of curator Robbie Lowery and the stellar contributions from the artists. Two artists that we have had our eyes on for a while that were featured in some of our previous Art Focus articles, Eloy Morales (focus) & Joel Rea (focus) will be part of a group show this weekend at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Based on Actual Events also includes Alyssa Monks and Diego Koi, with all four artists showing particular skill with hyper-realism. If Morales’ work above piques your interest, plan to attend the opening on Saturday night, January 11th.

In the middle of last Fall, Swoon (interviewed) was tapped as the next artist to hit the iconic Bowery & Houston mural location. We caught her working day and night (here) to get her visual language up for New Yorkers to enjoy. Utilizing her well known hand-painted paper cuts and wheatpaste collages, Swoon & her team created a beautiful mural that captured the layers of the city and its urban inhabitants. For our latest Art Focus feature, we have for you the Brooklyn-based Zaria Forman and her work exploring climate change. Inspired by her childhood travels, she has taken recent trips to places like the northwest coast of Greenland, retracing the 1869 journey of American painter William Bradford, then using this experience to paint the rapidly diminishing arctic landscape (seen above). When in New York City the old adage is true – “Go big or go home.” In the latter half of 2013, Shepard Fairey visited the Big Apple for the Wooster Collective anniversary show (covered) where he stayed for a while to share his brand of visual beautification. Openings: Swoon – “Braddock Tiles Benefit Group Exhibition”

Back in November, Swoon (interviewed) led a project entitled Braddock Tiles aimed to revitalize a Lutheran church from the early 20th century. Superchief Gallery and the Anita Shapolsky Foundation hosted an evening of celebration and launched the project with a series of prints and original works also contributed by ROA, RETNA, Dennis McNett and more.

Basel Week Miami ’13: Audrey Kawasaki for Thinkspace @ SCOPE

Just like earlier last year for SCOPE during Basel Week Switzerland (covered), the Thinkspace Gallery booth in Miami was also featured a mini-solo show from Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed). Included in the new body of work were her familiar exquisite portraiture of seductively innocent girls, with her technique taking advantage of the wood grain in each piece. We stopped by Kelsey Brookes‘ first solo exhibition recently in New York at Judith Charles Gallery. Entitled Better Living Through Chemistry, this show features a large body of work focusing in on his abstract paintings and musings via eye catching molecular structures. This style is also based on his scientific background and delves further into drugs and its effect on the human consciousness.
