British artist Phlegm opened his first ever gallery show at Howard Griffin Gallery in Shoreditch on Saturday, the first of February. The Bestiary is entirely a non-commercial exhibition meaning the entire installation was created for the purpose of showing in this space only. The Sheffield-based artist has been working long days since mid December, building the installation, cutting up panels, and creating plaster sculptures that were later painted over in his recognizable style. We recently stopped by the Klein Sun Gallery in New York to admire new works from Li Hongbo in a show entitled Tools Of Study. The Chinese artist and former book editor has taken his obsession with paper to new levels with flexible sculptures that bend our perceptions of reality. Last week, AM attended the New York City Ballet (NYCB) to catch the premiere of the next exhibition in their artist series, this time featuring JR. The French “photograffeur” took the opportunity to transform the Lincoln Center with his imagery both inside and out. Utilizing numerous photo sessions with NYCB’s dancers, JR was able to add a new wrinkle to the storied performance troupe’s performances. AM was on hand for the opening night of Jason Thielke’s (interviewed) third solo show at Denver’s David B. Smith Gallery. Deviating from his trademark female figures, the show features animals as well as landscapes of some of Colorado’s most recognizable geologic formations, including Red Rocks Amphitheater and Garden of the Gods. Thielke continues to work in mixed media on wood and use his signature angular lines and minimal use of color. Basel Week Miami ’13: Ai Weiwei – “According to What?” @ Pérez Art Museum Miami

One of the exhibitions we made sure to stop by while in Miami for Art Basel Week back in December was the survey of Ai Weiwei’s work at the Perez Art Museum Miami. Housed in the newly designed building by Herzog & de Meuron, the showing spans the Chinese activist – artist’s 20 year career and features a wide range of works including photography and the large-scale installations like the amazing stacked bicycles seen above. For our latest Art Focus feature, we wanted to bring the dynamic work of Aaron Li-Hill to your attention. The recently relocated artist who moved from Toronto to New York City can be seen above working on one of his kinetic and visually arresting installations, another one of which can be seen below. LA Art Show ’14: Littletopia

Last week when AM stopped by the LA Art Show, we made sure to pay a visit to the special Littletopia section curated by Red Truck Gallery. Featuring an array of artists and art that is seldom seen at the event, this part of the fair saw a healthy and steady stream of visitors. Participants included galleries like Sloan Fine Art, Breeze Block, La Luz de Jesus, Last Rites, Roq La Rue, Spoke Art, Thinkspace, and Varnish Fine Art. Last week in Malaysia, Ernest Zacharevic opened a solo show at the Old Hin Bus Depot, mirroring his street work with paintings indoors as well as multiple installations and murals outdoors (more on these later).
