POW! WOW! Hawaii ’18 / Previews: “Exploring The New Contemporary Movement” @ Honolulu Museum of Art School

With this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii fast approaching, it’s time to preview the annual associated Exploring The New Contemporary Movement group exhibition (see 2017 & 2016 & 2015 & 2014) curated by Thinkspace. The fifth iteration of the group exhibition will open on February 11th and will once again be held at the Honolulu Museum of Art School, featuring a larger 24″ x 24″ format. This Saturday night (December 2nd), James “Dalek” Marshall (interviewed) will be opening a solo show at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. The Space Monkey Returns features a new body of work celebrating the 20th anniversary of one of the North Carolina-based artist’s most iconic characters. It seemed Marshall had retired the space monkey a while back and moved on to other things, but as he mentioned in his recent interview here, it made sense to revisit it at this time. On October 15th, the Urban Dawn II exhibition organized by curator19.90 will get underway in Beirut, Lebanon. Artist James “Dalek” Marshall (interviewed) recently released a new bedding collection through Target featuring his iconic imagery. The duvet cover set and pillow covers highlight different stages of his career including the space monkey phase as well as the current geometric pattern-based work his is known for now. Earlier this month, Chandran Gallery in San Francisco opened a show curated by Andrew Schoultz entitled Major Work. The locally-based artist carefully selected a roster of participants that included himself, Alicia McCarthy, Aaron Noble, Kelsey Brookes, Revok, James Marshall (Dalek), Sam Friedman, Eric Yahnker, Mark Dean Veca, Saber, Hilary Pecis, Tim Biskup, Eric White, and Allison Schulnik. Releaese: Dalek – “Untitled 101” Print

James Marshall aka Dalek (interviewed) recently released a 38 color handpulled silkscreen through Dynamo Editions. Untitled 101 comes with a paper size of 26 inches by 26 inches and an image size of 24 1/2 inches x 24 1/2 inches and was produced in an edition size of 50. New Dalek Mural (North Ridge Basketball Academy)

Just in time for winter mini camp, James Marshall aka Dalek (interviewed) recently completed new murals at the North Ridge Basketball Academy. The locally based artist harnessed his signature gradiated geometric aesthetic to paint the walls high up in a gym that any hoops fan would love to play in, perfectly capturing the organization’s philosophy and ministry. James Marshall, or better known as Dalek (interviewed) by some of his fans, recently finished a series of murals at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Painting his distinctive color spectrum style throughout the institution including the SMoCA Lounge, Store@SMoCA, and a mural (co-commissioned by Scottsdale Public Art) in the outdoor courtyard wall that leads to SMoCA’s permanent James Turrell Skyspace, the Hurley affiliated artist and designer certainly left his mark.
