Upcoming: POW! WOW! Long Beach

With the annual event in Hawaii expanding into SXSW this year and Taiwan last year, the POW! WOW! festival will finally hit the west coast on June 21-28. POW! WOW! Long Beach will feature a week of exhibitions, film screenings, talks and of course public murals. Participating in the street art will be Aaron De La Cruz, Benjie Escobar, Cryptik, Fafi, Hueman, James Jean, Jeff McMillan, Jeff Soto, Low Bros, Madsteez, Nychos, Push, and Tristan Eaton. On Thursday night, September 19th, the Long Beach Museum of Art will host the opening of a new group exhibition entitled Risqué {dirty little pictures}. Thinkspace gallery made a move into Culver City last month, and as one gallery leaves to take a step up, another moves in to fill it’s boots. Openings: “Celeritas” @ SURU

The motorcycle culture themed “Celeritas” show (previewed) and silent auction held last weekend at SURU in Los Angeles was a huge success, raising $66,000 for Riders for Health, a non-profit that funds the transportation of medical personnel to remote communities in Africa. The centerpiece of the show was a 2009 Suzuki Hayabusa customized by Barry McGee coupled with a mannequin draped in styling Darren Romanelli fashioned motorcycle leathers. Motorcycle culture and fine art come together this Sunday, July 12 with “Celeritas,” a motorcycle culture themed art show for charity, opening at SURU in Los Angeles.
