Basel Week Miami ’11: Marcel Dzama @ David Zwirner

Now that Art Basel Week Miami has passed for another year, we’ve had a chance to catch our breath a little. We still have more to share with you though like Marcel Dzama’s work at the David Zwirner booth at the main fair. Taking center stage was this inset intricately conceived diorama featuring the NY-based artist’s sculptural skills and sense of theater. More photos of his other work for the booth after the jump…

Signings: Marcel Dzama @ David Zwirner

AM recently got to attend a book signing at the David Zwirner gallery and catch Marcel Dzama’s book signing session. Held on a sunday afternoon, we caught up with Marcel as he graciously spoke and signed books for those that attended. Marcel also took some time to draw a beautiful little sketch for fans who patiently waited in a two hour queue. For those who haven’t seen pics from his current show at the New York gallery, take a look here. More photos from the [...]

This Tuesday, Phillips de Pury & Company will be holding their more-accessible Under the Influence contemporary auction in New York. Among the lots are pieces by many of our favorite artists, including Chiho Aoshima, Marcel Dzama, Phil Frost, and Barry McGee. One notable lot is Portrait 5, Stephen(s), 2009–2010, a collaborative work by Shepard Fairey, Andres Serrano and Frank Stella, which debuted on the December 8, 2010 episode of The Colbert Report as part of an interview with Steve Martin and is now being sold [...]

Openings: Marcel Dzama – “Behind Every Curtain” @ David Zwirner

We recently attended the absolutely packed opening of Marcel Dzama’s latest solo show at David Zwirner, entitled Behind Every Curtain. As promised, the exhibition featured Dzama’s signature watercolor works on paper and dioramas, but also included some amazing life-sized figurative sculptures, as well as sketches and renderings for his movie A Game of Chess. One of  the most captivating pieces of the show was the rotating carousel of metal robot characters, which really captured the whimsy and imagination that make Dzama such a favorite. See [...]

Opening tomorrow at Chelsea’s David Zwirner is the latest solo show by Marcel Dzama, entitled Behind Every Curtain. The exhibition will feature the artist’s film, A Game of Chess, alongside related drawings, sculptures and dioramas. As the name suggests, the movie is based on the classic strategy board game, with Dzama’s fantastic characters dressed in chess piece-themed costumes and masks, battling to the death on top of a checkered board. A new catalog of artwork and film and production stills will be released to accompany [...]

Frieze 2010: Marcel Dzama

To continue our focus on some of the most enjoyable elements of the Frieze Art Fair, we were drawn in to a room within David Zwirner’s booth dedicated to an installation of works by Marcel Dzama. A full sized hooded mannequin, complete with rifle, pirouetted in the centre of the room and drew voyeurs into a world of wonder from Dzama. Alongside the kinetic sculpture were a series of intricately detailed dioramas. One can only imagine the amount of time that went into each of [...]

Interviews / Opening: Richard Colman “Keep Out The Light” @ New Image Art

After six months of studio time, and a week in the gallery prior to the opening installing his latest exhibition, Richard Colman opened his “Keep Out The Light” exhibition at New Image Art recently. We have been watching out for updates on how the show was coming together, as Colman’s shows are usually very installation heavy, and always exciting. Richard was pounding the tools until the early hours each day with the install, and the scale & intensity of this show certainly doesn’t disappoint – [...]
