We recently attended the absolutely packed opening of Marcel Dzama’s latest solo show at David Zwirner, entitled Behind Every Curtain. As promised, the exhibition featured Dzama’s signature watercolor works on paper and dioramas, but also included some amazing life-sized figurative sculptures, as well as sketches and renderings for his movie A Game of Chess. Opening tomorrow at Chelsea’s David Zwirner is the latest solo show by Marcel Dzama, entitled Behind Every Curtain. The exhibition will feature the artist’s film, A Game of Chess, alongside related drawings, sculptures and dioramas. As the name suggests, the movie is based on the classic strategy board game, with Dzama’s fantastic characters dressed in chess piece-themed costumes and masks, battling to the death on top of a checkered board. To continue our focus on some of the most enjoyable elements of the Frieze Art Fair, we were drawn in to a room within David Zwirner’s booth dedicated to an installation of works by Marcel Dzama. A full sized hooded mannequin, complete with rifle, pirouetted in the centre of the room and drew voyeurs into a world of wonder from Dzama. Volta NY is a relatively young fair that sets out to put the focus back on the artists, by presenting a highly selected group of solo shows. While wandering around Chelsea, we happened upon “The Birthday Party,” a fun show at ClampArt by New York-based artist Scott Daniel Ellison. We were not familiar with Ellison’s work but were immediately intrigued by the groupings of small illustrative paintings – dark yet humorous – with a painting style reminiscent of Marcel Dzama’s earlier painting style, but perhaps more expressionistic. Last week, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal premiered an exhibition by Canadian artist Marcel Dzama called “For a Thousand Tricks”. From what we saw at the David Zwirner booth at Art Basel, the show looks to be a wild one. Filled with his signature illustrative style using nostalgic references contrasted by the irony of politics and eroticism, Marcel always finds very subtle ways to bash his points home. This new piece from Marcel Dzama caught our eye when we stopped by the David Zwirner booth yesterday at the Art Basel press preview. Painted on perforated player piano paper (alliteration not intended), the new works appear more complex and rich. Not only were these available for sale, it was also a preview for what to expect from Dzama’s show at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal early next year in Canada. Marcel Dzama recently collaborated with David Byrne on this video from N.A.S.A. featuring the track “The People Tree.” This isn’t Marcel’s first foray into the music field as he has done album cover work in the past for artists such as They Might Be Giants and Beck. If you remember, N.A.S.A. collaborated with Shepard Fairey on a previous music video “Money” (seen below). We wonder what other artists they have lined up for the future.
