This latest edition of our Rewind article is headlined by a trailer for a new short film by JR (interviewed) starring Robert De Niro. Entitled Ellis, the footage follows the Academy Award Winning actor as he stars as an immigrant whose pursuit of a new life expired at Ellis Island. Traversing an abandoned hospital complex, De Niro is confronted with ghostly archival photographs of immigrants and hospital patients taken over a century ago pasted up by the JR, part of the French artist’s Unframed series of works. A couple months ago, White Walls in San Francisco played host to Flotsam’s Harvest by the Bolinas-based Mike Shine (featured). The exhibition consisted of an immersive installation featuring paintings, films, and performance art filled with symbolism and clues as to solve the dark “World Riddle” posed by Friedrich Nietzsche in his book, Thus Spake Zarathustra. If you recall, the German philosopher and poet also provided inspiration for Shine’s show in Los Angeles back in 2011 (covered). Check out the rest of the photos below… Photo credit: Joe Russo. Saturday, May 7 from 2:00 to 8:00PM, Copro Gallery will host the closing party for Mike Shine’s latest show, Der Wilden Mann, Thus Sprach Flotsam; Metamorphosis 3. In addition to checking out the show, patrons will be able to view a screening of Mike Shine videos and collect a few of the freebies they will be giving out. Shine was able to transform the gallery into a futuristic circus that is interactive (carnival games) and explores the themes of the philosopher Frederich Neitzsche’s work on […]
One thing about Oakland, it’s a city that represents to the fullest. Want evidence of that? Just look at this show. Curated by a name you all should be familiar with, none other than Ken Harman, this is a show that celebrates and showcases artists from Oakland, Berkeley, and the greater East Bay area. They include the well-known, the emerging, and the soon-to-be stars. These include Monica Canilao, Skinner, Alex Pardee, Eddie Colla, and Mike Shine, just to name a few. The exhibition can be […]
Last weekend, the Laguna Art Museum opened their doors to crowds of art fans anxious to check out the newest exhibition – Art Shack. The group show included installations by artists like Mike Shine (featured), Martin Wittfooth, Kenny Scharf, Clayton Brothers (featured), and Jeff Gillette (who showed recently in LA) with a fantastic three-dimensional representation of his signature “slum” imagery. More photos after the jump but be sure to check out Hi-Fructose’s full photoset here.
Following our studio visit with Mike Shine last week (here), AM headed down to San Francisco to check out the fruits of his recent labors for SFMoMA‘s 75th Anniversary. Much as flotsam will accumulate in the ocean, creating a massive and no longer disjointed whole, the Mike Shine Show was part Fastelavn carnival, part three penny opera and part interactive installation. With carnival games and creepy clowns, Shine’s latest experience successfully brought back the fun and wonder of art to both parents and children alike, […]
AM had the honor this past weekend of visiting Mike Shine‘s historic “surf shack” as the artist was preparing for his latest installation, opening today at SFMoMA. Nestled away in the heart of Bolinas, Mike Shine has created for himself the ideal Nordic retreat, the perfect getaway for him and his family of artists. Purchased six years ago, the surf shack has become an institution in and of itself. With recreations built for the Museum of Craft and Folk Art, Mollusk Surf Shop, White Walls, […]
Following his recent recreations of his historic Art Shack at Art Basel Miami and the Museum of Craft and Folk Art earlier this year, Mike Shine starts off 2010 proper with yet another installation, this time at the prestigious SF MoMA. Debuting on the eve of their 75th Anniversary Show, the “Mike Shine Show” will run from January 16th to the 17th. Mike recently sent us a couple photos of the mural he’s working on, see the second process pic after the jump.
