Rewind: Jul 14 – Oct 25

This latest edition of our Rewind article is headlined by a trailer for a new short film by JR (interviewed) starring Robert De Niro. Entitled Ellis, the footage follows the Academy Award Winning actor as he stars as an immigrant whose pursuit of a new life expired at Ellis Island. Traversing an abandoned hospital complex, De Niro is confronted with ghostly archival photographs of immigrants and hospital patients taken over a century ago pasted up by the JR, part of the French artist’s Unframed series of works. Openings: Mike Shine – “Flotsam’s Harvest” @ White Walls

A couple months ago, White Walls in San Francisco played host to Flotsam’s Harvest by the Bolinas-based Mike Shine (featured). The exhibition consisted of an immersive installation featuring paintings, films, and performance art filled with symbolism and clues as to solve the dark “World Riddle” posed by Friedrich Nietzsche in his book, Thus Spake Zarathustra. If you recall, the German philosopher and poet also provided inspiration for Shine’s show in Los Angeles back in 2011 (covered). Check out the rest of the photos below… Photo credit: Joe Russo. Installation: Mike Shine @ SFMoMA

Following our studio visit with Mike Shine last week (here), AM headed down to San Francisco to check out the fruits of his recent labors for SFMoMA‘s 75th Anniversary. Much as flotsam will accumulate in the ocean, creating a massive and no longer disjointed whole, the Mike Shine Show was part Fastelavn carnival, part three penny opera and part interactive installation. With carnival games and creepy clowns, Shine’s latest experience successfully brought back the fun and wonder of art to both parents and children alike, […]

Purchased six years ago, the surf shack has become an institution in and of itself. With recreations built for the Museum of Craft and Folk Art, Mollusk Surf Shop, White Walls, […]
