Museums: El Anatsui – “Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works” @ Brooklyn Museum

On view at the Brooklyn Museum is Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works, a breath-taking solo exhibition by arguably Africa’s most celebrated contemporary artist, El Anatsui. Born in Ghana and currently working in Nigeria, Anatsui is best known for his vibrant large-scale sculptures made from common discarded materials. By folding thousands of foil liquor bottle tops in several distinct ways, arranging them and connecting them together into sheets, he is able to transform what once was garbage into beautiful works that appear to flow like textiles […]

Openings: Parra – “Tracy Had a Hard Sunday” @ Jonathan Levine

Dutch artist Piet Janssen, aka Parra, brought a new body of work to Jonathan Levine Gallery for his debut exhibition there. Entitled Tracy Had a Hard Sunday, this series was composed of works on canvas and paper as well as sculptures, and gave the audience a dose of the provocative post-pop visuals that we’ve come to expect from the artist. The show exemplifies Parra’s unique vision and skill with his sexy imagery and signature palette of vibrant reds and blues. The artist took some time to draw […]

Armory Week ’13: Scope Art Fair – First Look

One of the annual satellite fairs we look forward to during Armory Week is Scope New York. This international fair always brings together a diverse mix of visual, performance, sculptural and photographic art from a range of emerging artists, which we find to be a nice change of pace from the more mainstream contemporary art showcased at the Armory Art Fair. This year, we saw works from street, urban and low brow-pop surrealist artists, including such AM favorites as Ron English, GILF, Brian Viveros and […]

Streets: JR x Daniel Arsham (NYC)

It’s always interesting to watch artists work on collaborations as they try to meld their different techniques and imagery together in a coherent fashion. One of the more successful artists in doing this is street artist and photographer JR (see his joint ventures with Vhils, Os Gemeos, André, Liu Bolin, and José Parlá in the past). The latest artist to work with the French photograffeur is NY-based sculptor Daniel Arsham featuring JR’s famous eye pasted inside Arsham’s sculptural elements. Discuss JR here. Art Focus: Patricia Piccinini

Our eyes were recently drawn to the work of Patricia Piccinini with a sculpture that is currently part of a group show (How To Tell The Future From The Past) at Haunch of Venison New York. Entitled The Carrier, the hyper-realistic piece from the multidisciplinary artist makes the viewer almost think it is real if not for the fantastical creature that is holding an elderly woman on its back. Take a look at more detailed photos below… Via Designboom. Discuss Patricia Piccinini here.

Streets: Slinkachu (London)

Recently, street sculptor & photographer Slinkachu was asked to participate 20 Years of War Child, a new exhibition celebrating 20 years of the charity’s (War Child) work. He created three installations that he staged in various parts of London, the results of which will be put on display at The British Music Experience through March 28th. Take a look at the other pieces below along with shots from different perspectives below… Discuss Slinkachu here.

Upcoming: Ron Mueck @ Fondation Cartier

Coming up in April, Fondation Cartier continues their history of stellar exhibitions with a showing from acclaimed sculptor Ron Mueck – the first major display of his work that we have seen since last year (covered). The London-based artist is planning to exhibit nine of his recent hyperrealistic pieces, including three new ones produced specifically for this event featuring two teenagers in the street, a mother and baby, and an elderly couple on the beach. To accompany the exhibition, a new film documenting the artist at work will […]

Art Focus: Jake & Dinos Chapman

Jake & Dinos Chapman, often referred to as the Chapman Brothers, are English artists known for their subversive humor and provocative work often dealing with themes of  violence and death. What caught our attention recently was a new epic miniature landscape composed of four encased diorama entitled The Sum of All Evil that they created for their current show Chicken at the PinchukArtCentre in Kiev. The brothers often utilize historical references and inspiration from some of their favorite artists like Hieronymus Bosch and Francisco de Goya in their work, with this piece being no different.  Take a […]

Openings: GILF! – “i EXAM” @ Arcilesi Homberg

New York artist GILF! recently unveiled a fresh body of work at Arcilesi Homberg in DUMBO. Entitled i Exam, this brand new series of paintings comes from a different direction (as seen in our visit to her studio) than her previous graff & stencil style. Drawing from the experiences of recent travels to Berlin and Miami and utilizing the 90s visual effects of the “Magic Eye”, GILF flips the retro switch and begs the question that in the age of digital preoccupation and corporate & marketing bombardment, […]
