Currently showing at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery through May 4th is Thursday’s Girl from painter Josh Agle, otherwise known as SHAG (interviewed). For his fourth solo exhibition with the Chelsea showspace, the Socal-based painter presents a new body of work inspired by “All Tomorrow’s Parties, the classic Velvet Underground song in which lyrics written by Lou Reed spoke to New York’s downtown art scene found in places such as Warhol’s Factory.” The pieces reflect an aesthetic strongly influenced by mid-century modern design and are rendered in his distinctive style and palette. The annual BLAB WORLD show (see 2009, 2010, and 2011) is set to open this Saturday night, September 8th, at the Copro Gallery. This will be the 8th showing in the series curated by Monte Beauchamp and will feature art from the upcoming BLAB WORLD 3 book which will be released next year. A couple weeks ago, the 20th anniversary of cult hit television show Twin Peaks was celebrated with a group exhibition at the Copro Gallery entitled Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. This Saturday night, March 24th, the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica will play host to a group exhibition celebrating 18 years of Juxtapoz goodness. Last night in Culver City, SHAG (interviewed) unveiled a selection of his newest paintings at the Corey Helford Gallery. The works featured his signature mid-century modern aesthetic with a vividly colored palette and ranged from small to large sized. With a drink in hand and his own animal costume, the Southern California – based artist looked ready to get his party on like many of his characters in this new body of work entitled Animal Kingdom. Opening this Saturday, February 11th, Culver City showspace Corey Helford Gallery welcomes back SHAG (2009) for his newest solo show entitled Animal Kingdom. Coinciding thematically with the current exhibition at the gallery from Eric Joyner (covered), SHAG’s latest paintings incorporate his retro-chic characters in animal costumes as well as interacting with their furry friends. Next February in Los Angeles, Josh Agle aka SHAG will be presenting a new body of work at the Corey Helford Gallery, site of his solo (covered) at the end of 2009. It looks like animal costumes and hijinks will ensue when Animal Kingdom opens with paintings all created in his retro-chic fashion. Discuss SHAG here.
