Update: Luke Chueh for “East West Connect” @ Above Second

The Arrested Motion crew will be flying in to Hong Kong tomorrow as our first curatorial project, East West Connect, opens up at the Above Second Gallery on Friday night. In a couple days, as we install the show, we’ll be able to show you a complete preview, but for now, take a look at this piece from Luke Chueh (interviewed). For this painting, EVERYBODY LOVES PANDA (YELLOW), you can see that Luke’s signature sad bear character is trying to blend in with his new [...]

Teaser: Arrested Motion – “East West Connect” @ Above Second (Hong Kong)

For those in Hong Kong, we are excited to announce our first ever curatorial project to be hosted by the Above Second Gallery at the end of next month. East West Connect will feature artists who hail from an Asian background and/or those who have utilized imagery inspired by the Far East in the past. Themes to be explored include ideas of identity for those who have dual cultural allegiances, melding and fusion of artistic influences, and the discussion of the work when brought into [...]

Openings: MS Fundraiser for Tim Strazza @ Joshua Liner Gallery

We all hit bumps in the road, but with a little help we can all overcome any obstacles. As mentioned previously, a good friend of AM and assistant director of Joshua Liner Gallery, Tim Strazza, was unfortunately diagnosed with a Multiple Sclerosis. We helped sponsor a fundraiser created by the gallery to generate funds that went to support Tim and his medical bills. It seemed that almost everyone came out of the woodworks to donate artwork for the charity auction including a heavy rotation of [...]

Benefits: MS Fundraiser for Tim Strazza @ Joshua Liner Gallery

This Thursday, a very special art fundraiser will be held at Joshua Liner Gallery for our friend Tim Strazza who was unfortunately diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. We are helping to sponsor a benefit event where all proceeds will go to his medical bills. Some of your favorite AM artists have generously donated works for the cause which will be available via a silent auction. Online absentee bids will be available, so please contact the gallery. The art community has banded together to show their support. [...]

Openings: Tat Ito – “Memento Mori” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

We were impressed with the preview images we saw from Tat Ito’s debut New York solo show, Momento Mori, at the Joshua Liner Gallery, but were still blown away after seeing the paintings in person at the opening. Ito’s new paintings retain much of what we loved in his previous work, such as the humorous and unique costumed characters and delicate silver-leafed backgrounds. However, with this collection, Ito has taken his art stylistically and thematically further than anything he has done previously . Two pieces [...]

Previews: Tat Ito – “Memento Mori” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

New York-based Japanese artist Tat Ito makes his NYC solo debut with a show at the Joshua Liner Gallery entitled Memento Mori, the opening reception for which takes place 6-9pm this Thursday. The Latin phrase (literally “remember you will die”) often is used in reference to artwork representing death or the impermanent nature of life. However, from the look of the preview images we’ve seen, Ito seems to be using the term—along with certain visual allusions (like the lobster above) found within his new series [...]

Openings: “TRANSFORM” @ Sho Gallery

AM recently attended a great show at the Sho Gallery in Brooklyn. The group exhibition entitled TRANSFORM showcased the paintings and sculptures of 30 artists that work for or have worked at Takashi Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki Studios. Although this show was not in anyway affiliated with the studio, it certainly impressed with the overwhelming talent that this influential studio possess. Artists such as Tat Ito (featured), Pete Watts (featured), Fumi Nakamura, Cybele, Matt Haber and Eugenia Yu gave us a glimpse at their off-hours talent in [...]

Preview: “Summer Group Show” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

August in NYC is not typically the time to see great new art, as galleries tend to schedule group shows in order not to waste their A material on the few gallery goers left in town instead of summering in the Hamptons. Past experience, however, has shown us that the Joshua Liner Gallery defies expectations with their summer show, taking the opportunity to set the stage for their upcoming season, by exhibiting a strong selection of their regular roster and introducing us to a few [...]
