Preview: “La Luz de Jesus 25″ Part II

After hosting the first part of their 25th anniversary group show last month, La Luz De Jesus makes room for the opening of round two of the festivities on November 4th. Preview: Yumiko Kayukawa – “Coming Home” @ Roq La Rue

Tonight at Roq La Rue, Japanese artist Yumiko Kayukawa will be introducing a new body of work in her home city entitled Coming Home, which will also be her first solo at the gallery since 2002. The Seattle-based painter has been working to expand her narrative since her show in San Francisco in March (covered) and continues her fascination with her female protagonists and their animal friends presented in complex compositions. Openings: “Momentum” @ Lebasse Projects (Chinatown)

Last weekend, AM stopped by to take an advanced look at the new LeBasse Projects location in historic Chinatown. Featuring the curatorial touch of Christine Le, one half of the husband and wife team behind the LA-based gallery, the show includes some female talent that has caught her eye like Seonna Hong, Yumika Kayukawa, Hera, Laura Ball, Melissa Haslam, and more. Openings: Yumiko Kayukawa – “Rock You in a Tatami Room” @ Shooting Gallery

Portland-based Japanese modern pop artist, Yumiko Kayukawa opened her seventh solo show at Shooting Gallery on Saturday in SF. The show featured her signature acrylic and ink based works full of color, girls, animals, personal narrative, and imagination. The show’s title, “Rock You in a Tatami Room” is derived from a term Yumiko came up with while creating the works in the show, which reflects her career and life in the U.S., as well as her style. LeBasse Projects has been busy setting up a new gallery space at Chung King Road of LA’s Chinatown district, and now everything is set to go as they’ll officially launch the secondary location at the end of the month. Preview: Aftershock LA – Art Auction Benefit

An eclectic art show and event, Aftershock LA, organized by Cafe Mode, is set to open tonight, May 15th at the Royal/T Cafe. The benefit (tickets $25 at the door) is put on to help raise money for Build Change, an international non-profit that designs earthquake-resistant house in developing countries and trains people to build them. Over the weekend, AM attended the opening of two shows at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery. In the front gallery was Yumiko Kayukawa’s “God from the East,” which consists of a new collection of small- and medium-sized paintings. Kayukawa’s work blends modern and traditional aspects of Japanese culture with a colorful, playful style.  In gallery two, Vancouver-based artist Ben Tour is exhibiting a selection of dark and free-flowing portraits of women on canvas and paper, as well as a large-scale mural.
