Openings: Damon Soule – “Same Loud No” @ Fecal Face

Fresh off his “Amused Loon” show last October at Joshua Liner, Damon Soule returns to his former stomping grounds with a new body of work. Entitled “Same Loud No“, Soule’s triumphant return to the Bay Area (his last show was in ’06) boasts a bevy of geometrics, prime numbers, acid casualties and other-worldy existence. AM swung by the Fecal Face Gallery on opening day, check out the pictures after the jump.

Openings: “Shinganist” Group Show @ FIFTY24SF

Japanese artist Usugrow, best known for his collaborative projects with Upper Playground and Vans, debuted his latest project “Shinganist” at FIFTY24SF last night. Featuring the paintings, sculpture and drawing of Bene, Mozyskey, Toshikazu Nozaka and Jun Kaneko, “Shinganist” is an intriguing look into the work of some of Japan’s up-and-coming young artists. Straddling the fine line of street art, skate and tattoo culture, while simultaneously drawing inspiration from centuries of traditional Japanese imagery, the project looks like it’s off to a great start with a […]

LeBasse Projects: Dining with Yoskay Yamamoto & Melissa Haslam

Fine dining and even finer art – that’s what life’s all about. Last night, AM was invited to attend a very intimate dinner with a small group of collectors to preview the upcoming shows of Yoskay Yamamoto (featured) and Melissa Haslam (interviewed). The dinner was hosted by LeBasse Projects and provided a select few some private time to interact with the artists and find out more about their work and artistic direction. The fun night also gave attendees a chance to catch up and have spirited discussions […]

Openings: “Get Rich Quick!” Group Exhibition @ Carmichael Gallery

Last night, the Carmichael Gallery in Hollywood pulled no punches with their all-star show, “Get Rich Quick!,” showcasing the strongest talents in the street and urban art genre. Some scorching hot pieces lined the gallery’s walls for the exhibition, including: a rare Banksy canvas, a KAWS ad disruption, boxes and screen-printed collages from Faile, to originals by Barry McGee and Micallef and much more. Visiting the gallery was like seeing a modern day museum retrospective of the last five years in urban art. Truly amazing. AM has all the […]

Preview: Brian M. Viveros & Matthew Bone – “Southern” @ Last Rites Gallery

Brian M. Viveros and Matthew Bone open their two-person solo exhibition entitled “Southern” tomorrow, May 9th, at Last Rites Gallery. Both artists have quite the knack for painting images with a strong visual impact, each depicting their own edgy versions of sexy women. Viveros describes his approach to this show as “keeping the vibe STRONG and DIRTY homie, just the way we like it” in an interview with our friends at Sour Harvest while Bone continues his exploration of the “lurid underbelly of humanity.” In […]

Openings: Audrey Kawasaki – “Watching Shadows” or “Kageboushi” @ Space Yui (Japan)

Audrey Kawasaki’s (interviewed) show “Watching Shadows” or “Kageboushi” opened last night at the Space Yui Gallery in Japan. The exhibition included some of her signature paintings of dreamy-eyed girls, who have a sense of innocence, yet paradoxically possess a touch of sensuality as well. However, it seems that in this body of work, although subtle, her characters are maturing in front of our eyes, perhaps with a hint of what’s to come. No canvas pieces in this show, but Audrey explores her lasercut technique further […]

Openings: Logan Hicks & Broken Crow – “Broken Horse”

This past weekend, Logan Hicks and Broken Crow (Mike Fitzsimmons & John Grider) opened their “drive-by” show “Broken Horse” for a packed Brooklyn house. Held in a unique venue that once housed the Hamilton Savings & Loan, the art was really the draw. Utilizing an intricate stenciling process, Logan was able to create scenic snapshots of some of the coolest urban landscapes we’ve seen from a stencil artist. Broken Crow brought mother nature back to the concrete jungle by integrating the animal back into the […]
