AM dropped into Colin and Sas Christian’s debut UK show opening last night at Opera Gallery’s London location. When we first saw the preview images, which we showed you here, from husband and wife Colin and Sas, we knew that this would be be a must see show. Both artists had taken things to another level in terms of the scale that they worked to – Sas going big on canvas and Colin going supersize with his sculptures, the largest of the pieces being around 9 feet tall.
Sas’ oils were a joy to behold – painted with a skillful hand, the palette of colours used for her semi-artificial girls popped off the wall, and all ended up displayed with stunning frames despite an apparent last minute effort from the framer! Colin’s sculptures showed a masterful command of his medium – the silicone of the fleshy elements complimenting the super-smooth fiberglass of the floor standing capsules. We can only imagine how the in-built LED lighting would look in a darkened room.
The Christians owned the gallery space, and charmed the crowd for this homecoming show – nearly twenty years since they left the UK to live in the United States – with a fantastic combination of floor standing and wall mounted work. We hope that they may be back to the UK soon after a taste of showing in London and catching up with friends and relatives.
