While we were in Miami for Art Basel last year, we heard whispers of a new documentary about Jean-Michel Basquiat entitled “The Radiant Child”. We never did make it to the special screening, but the film official premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year (also site of recent Banksy sightings) and now a trailer video has made itself available online.
Directed and filmed by the infamous graffiti artist’s friend Tamra Davis before his untimely death in 1988, she was overcome with the sadness of the situation and stored the footage away for almost 20 years. Around the time of a major Basquiat retrospective at MOCA, thankfully for us, she decided to finish the project. Soon to be considered the definitive documentary on the international art superstar, this is something everyone should check out.
