Basel Week Miami ’10 – Rhona Hoffman Gallery

As we strolled down the aisle’s of Art Basel Miami Beach, our eyes wandered towards paintings that were undeniably and unmistakeably by a certain artist.  That artist is Kehinde Wiley and they were hung on the walls of  Chicago’s Rhona Hoffman Gallery’s booth.  The pieces are from The World Stage: India-Sri Lanka series and feature – what else – portraits of various men.  Meet the rest of them after the jump…

Overtime: Dec. 5 – Dec. 11

Now, the world’s most expensive book – John James Audobon’s Birds of America. Steve Martin (one of the world’s best art collectors), Shepard Fairey, Andres Serrano, and Frank Stella on Colbert Report. Jeffrey Deitch planning a Julian Schnabel retrospective at MOCA Steve Martin boring?  He talks art, interrupted because not entertaining enough, later apologized to. Lost Leonardo di Vinci manuscript fragment found in France. Ai Weiwei picked on again.  This time, China bans him from traveling to Korea.  But the good news this week is […]

Openings: “Garfield” Group Show @ The Hundreds (Pop-Up Space)

Last Thursday night, The Hundreds hosted their Garfield themed art show and celebration at a pop-up location in Santa Monica. Along with the art, there were costumed characters, a signing by Garfield creator Jim Davis, and of course, the feline’s favorite food – lasagna! Hate it or love it, it was certainly interesting to see some unexpected artists in the lineup get out of their comfort zone for some themed pieces for once. More pics after the jump via The Hundreds / Meow…

Releases: KAWS x Robert Lazzarini – “Distorted Companions”

Wow, what a stunning collaboration between Robert Lazzarini, well known for his distorted sculptures, and KAWS in what we like to call the “Distorted Companions”. Lazzarini, who you may remember recently exhibited his twisted brass knuckles alongside KAWS’ work at the It Ain’t Fair exhibition (covered) by OHWOW during Art Basel Week, is a fellow Brookylnite and seems to be a natural partner for the re-engineering of the iconic figure on its 10th anniversary. Early word (which may or may not be accurate) on these […]

Videos: Scott Campbell x Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2011 Collection

The relationship between Louis Vuitton and Scott Campbell must’ve started off on the right foot thanks to their collaboration earlier this year (covered), as the multi-faceted artist now has the distinguished honor of designing an entire line for the pervasive brand. Following in the foot steps of such art luminaries as Takashi Murakami to have worked closely with the trend setting product house, Campbell who is known for his accomplished abilities with the pen and the tattoo gun, as well as for thinking outside the […]

This year’s feature will be Sergei Prokofiev’s children’s classic Peter & The Wolf. The collaboration will bring together NYC Opera’s musical director George Manahan to conduct the Juilliard Ensemble, while fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi will narrate the tale. The artistic character and set installation will be created […]

Basel Week Miami ’10: Kate Moss Portfolio @ Danzinger Projects

Images of Kate Moss are a welcome sight anywhere they spring up. Such was the case with the 11 photographs on display at the Danzinger Projects (previewed) booth during PULSE Miami. Forming a limited edition portfolio of hand picked shots from throughout her storied 20+ year career, the iconic images provided a welcome respite from the sometimes overwhelming barrage of artwork more synonymous with Art Basel Week. With work from such venerable photographers as Chuck Close, Juergen Tell, and Annie Leibovitz, and packaging designed by […]

Basel Week Miami ’10 – Sprüth Magers

Sprüth Magers – based out of Berlin and London – certainly brought back to the states work by some of America’s best artists.  Their booth included a prominent sculpture by Sterling Ruby, a painting by artist-of-the-hour George Condo (whose paintings seemed to be everywhere at the fair this year), a photo by Cindy Sherman, a large text-based installation by Jenny Holzer, instantly-recognizable John Baldessari and Barbara Kruger pieces, and a painting by Jeff Koons.  See them for yourself after the jump… More after the jump…
