Basel Week Miami ’10: New Image Art

Last night, New Image Art took over South Beach’s Cafeina for a group exhibition (teased) that should prove to be one of the more compelling events of Art Basel Week. As is often the case, Sao Paulo street art sensations Osgemeos stole the show with their heartfelt interpretations of their Brazilian countrymen, always dressed to impress in colorfully patterned attire. A selection of giant canvases, executed flawlessly with spray cans and incorporating the playful imagery and vibrant palette that has become patented by the Twins, […]

Basel Week Miami ’10: Blum & Poe

Los Angeles contemporary art staple Blum & Poe was yet another in a seemingly never ending stream of must-see booths at the main fair, Art Basel Miami Beach. Of particular interest was a massive new work by Takashi Murakami, exhibiting the Japanese pop art icon’s unique range and continued evolution within his self-branded “superflat” style. A diverse lineup of painters and photographers native to the prestigious gallery, including Zhang Huan, Florian Maier-Aichen, Dave Muller and Henry Taylor, filled out the walls. Check out more of […]

Basel Week Miami ’10 – KAWS Book Signing @ The Standard Hotel

As we reported earlier in the week, The Standard Miami served as ground zero today for a more intimate, less rushed signing of KAWS’ new book with Rizzoli, where guests were invited to sit down with the artist and share some time. Partnering with OHWOW, the local gallery who seemingly has their hands in everything special going on during Art Basel Week, the swanky pop-up shop was ripe with exclusively published art books, a selection of artwork and custom products only offered for the weekend […]

Basel Week Miami ’10: Friends With You x Pharrell x Shepard Fairey x Paper Mag Party

Running at full steam right now down in South Beach, Art Basel Week is filled with many good things. This was most definitely one of them. Set upon the backdrop of Friends With You’s psychedelic outdoor installation, Rainbow City (previewed), Pharrell came to the conclusion the inflatable garden was the perfect location for a set of his hip-hop infused pop anthems. A brilliant idea, indeed, for the ubiquitous recording artist who has befriended countless contemporary artists and recently called upon the colorful Miami based art […]

Basel Week Miami ’10: Team Gallery

With more time to explore the big fair, Art Basel Miami Beach, a stroll past Team Gallery’s booth (teased) was in order. With an apparent dwindling inventory of works from Ryan McGinley’s newest body of work, Life Adjustment Center (covered), due to the overwhelming success of the series, two of the strongest images from the collection still took center stage and concentrated the majesty of the New York based photographer’s stirring vision. A selection of works from Cory Arcangel, Massimo Grimaldi, Slater Bradley, Gardar Eide […]

Basel Week Miami ’10: Retna – “Silver Lining” @ Primary Projects

Last night, before heading out to the requisite evening parties at Art Basel, we stopped by Primary Projects to check out the street calligraphic stylings of Retna (featured). His signature script in different manifestations infused the space with the West Coast aesthetic including the walls, floors, and doors reminiscent of his immersive show at Riviera and Riviera in August (covered). The impressive new body of work included large pieces on panels, found objects, and overwritten photographs. Fellow fans and notables in the street scene like […]

Basel Week Miami ’10: Barry McGee @ Ratio 3

Now that the initial excitement of preview day (covered) at Art Basel Miami Beach is over with, we can continue bringing you a more thorough look-see at some of the significant booths at the main fair. Exhibiting with San Francisco based Ratio 3 (teased) is influential street artist Barry McGee. Filling the bulk of the booth’s real estate in dramatic fashion were a series of large-scale clusters from the Bay Area icon, deftly composing the mixed-media wall installations synonymous with his gallery work. Rounding out […]

Releases: David Choe – “Tokyo Girl”

Although David Choe’s (featured) is currently in Miami, he’s found time to release the remaining “Tokyo Girl” prints from his recent Secret Studio show in Japan. The 17 x 17 inch print, inspired by “half-Japanese women and Shibuya,” is in a edition of 76 (priced at $250) and will be available today at noon pacific time at Trapeze Editions. For those looking for something a little more limited (run of 5), a larger 44 x 44 inch version will up for grabs for $808 as […]

Openings: Todd James “Infinite Lessons” @ A.L.I.C.E. Gallery

Fans of Todd James weathered the snow to show their support at the opening of his solo exhibition Infinite Lessons at A.L.I.C.E. Gallery in Brussels. Presenting his crude sense of humor in trademark fashion, James explores controversial topics of sex and war as only he can. The gravity of these issues is offset with the tongue in cheek levity of his illustrative style and comedic compositions, perfectly juxtaposing the heavy with the light. The opening also served as a first crack at his debut sculptural […]

Basel Week Miami ’10: Sanrio’s “Small Gift Miami” 50th Anniversary Celebration

With the pleasure of attending the event together with Shepard Fairey and his family, AM headed over to the opening of Small Gift Miami (previewed) for a bit of cross-generational fun during the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Sanrio. Coinciding with Art Basel Week, the Floridian version of last months successful group exhibition and mobile pop-up shop in Los Angeles (covered) lived up to it’s predecessor, with attendees enjoying a host of the hottest artists of the day reinvent Sanrio’s timeless characters. Curators Roger Gastman and […]
