Volta ’11 – Richard Colman @ V1 Gallery

Another great artist to be featured at this year’s VOLTA fair’s solo format was Richard Colman (interviewed). Represented at Copenhagen’s V1 Gallery booth, the San Francisco based artist impressed us with a diverse selection of his signature colorful and geometric works. Check it out after the jump.

Showing: Camille Rose Garcia – “Snow White and the Black Lagoon” @ Michael Kohn Gallery

Camille Rose Garcia took aim at another fairytale a couple weekends ago at Michael Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles with a new body of work based on Snow White, but instead of the seven dwarfs, she brought the whole story into the black lagoon. Like her Alice in Wonderland themed show last year, Camille blended imagery that was consistent in both her repertoire and the well-known tale like apples, poisons, and strange creatures culminating in a fantastic series of new paintings and drawings. Streets: Kid Acne’s giant ‘Art-Fag’ in Sheffield

AM ventured over to the wilds of South Yorkshire this weekend to visit the studio of Kid Acne, who is currently putting together a new body of work for his upcoming solo show at StolenSpace entitled Rhythm is a Dancer. More on that later…. The call of the outdoors apparently got the better of him though as he painted this huge ‘Art-Fag’ in the same spot as his Stick to the Plan slogan piece from last year. You can see it for miles around as […]

Openings: Stella Im Hultberg – “Fragmented” @ London Miles

If you want to catch Stella Im Hultberg’s (interviewed) show at London Miles, Monday will be your last day. The show which also featured Scott Belcastro runs only for 10 days so head over there to check out a diverse new body of work, especially her fantastic acrylic & colored pencil on wood pieces. More photos after the jump…

Openings: Hueless @ Mallick Williams & Co.

We recently attended the opening of Hueless, a group show of black and white works at Malick Williams & Co. Although the exhibition may have lacked color, it certainly did not lack artistry, with an exciting selection of monochromatic pieces by the likes of D Face, Shepard Fairey, Erik Haze, Curtis Kulig, Pete Watts and Skullphone. The show, most likely unofficially, also extended beyond the walls of the gallery, with several street pieces popping up on the adjacent blocks. Take a look at all our […]

Graffiti artist Smear may be prevented from profiting from sale of art in galleries.  Also, he got arrested and had his home searched this week. Trains with some post-graffiti abstrations. Legendary and esteemed art historian Leo Steinberg has passed away at the age of 90. Memoir fabricator & Oprah Winfrey nemesis James […]

Volta ’11 – Mark Jenkins @ Carmichael Gallery

VOLTA was a fair during Armory Week that had each gallery bring a single artist to feature. LA’s Carmichael Gallery showcased the talents of street artist Mark Jenkins. The Family Room booth housed many great sculptures from Mark that had fair attendees constantly stopping with double takes when encountering his eye catching pieces. Check it out after the jump.

Streets: Ethos (Sao Paulo)

Claudio Ethos, whose surrealistic street mural in Paris we recently featured, has been busy doing more painting. The Brazilian artist certainly has a way of catching the eye with his play on proportions and his imaginative imagery.  This new piece was done in his home country in its largest city – Sao Paolo. Take a look at what else he has been up to on Unurth. Discuss Ethos here.

Update: Kelsey Brookes

Kelsey Brookes, who we last saw exhibit in Germany in November, recently posted up some images of his new work. After rehanging the whole studio, he decided to go in a darker more angry direction and frankly, we are liking what we see. Take a look at more of what he’s been up to – after the jump…

Videos: Jonathan Yeo – “Porn in the USA”

Remember back in July of last year, when Jonathan Yeo brought his series of works and portraits created from collaged pornography to Beverly Hills. It was part of a series of shows put on by Steve Lazarides in a temporary gallery and was entitled “Porn in the USA” (covered). Apparently, they were filming the whole time.  Take a look above as Yeo and Lazarides are interviewed – all with the backdrop of some nice behind-the-scenes footage.
