Releases: Retna with Modern Multiples

Straight off an impressive showing at Art Basel week with a solo at Primary Projects (covered), Retna (featured) is already hard at work on his next project. It looks like he has an upcoming nice-sized release with Modern Multiples – hopefully with some hand-finished options like Saber’s Art Work Rebels Flag. More pics after the jump…

If today’s Urban Art auction at Bonhams can be seen as an indicator for the overall health of the Urban/Street Art market, then things are looking absolutely strong, exciting, and prosperous. Most lots found buyers and all the major pieces in the sale found new owners. Cai Guo-Qiang Taipei 101 Fireworks

Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang recently choreographed the 2011 New Year’s Eve fireworks display for Taipei. This year’s celebration was special because it was the Centennial of the Republic of China’s (Taiwan) founding in 1911. Streets: Sweet Toof stops the press in London

Looks like Sweet Toof has been re-appropriating an undisclosed number of Metro newspapers in an interventionist culture-jamming caper. Sweet Toof has got his teef into the front, back and centrefold pages of the paper, so check today’s ‘free-press’ at underground tube stations throughout London and try and find a copy for yourself ahead of Sweet Toof’s exhibition opening tonight. Having A Dig opens at Arch 402 Gallery, Cremer Street, London E2 tonight, and runs until 3rd February. Discuss Sweet Toof here.

Indoors: Ryan McGinness – “Black Holes” @ Phillips de Pury (NYC)

After our NYE stroll on the Highline peeking in on the Black Holes exhibition at Phillips de Pury, we simply need couldn’t get enough of Ryan McGinness’ masterful silkscreens and took another trip back. This time, we headed inside the auction house to enjoy the 24 works in detail. Video: JR – “The Wrinkles of the City”

Filmed and edited in his signature style, this The Wrinkles of the City video documents JR’s recent project in Shanghai which included an exhibition (covered) and street work (covered). With the general release of his acclaimed Women Are Heroes documentary set for this week in his home country, although not in the film, this footage should only excite the French street photographer’s fans even more before the worldwide release. Openings: Gardar Eide Einarsson – “Power Under Construction” @ Honor Fraser

This past Saturday saw the opening of Gardar Eide Einarsson’s second exhibition with Honor Fraser. The politically rebellious artist’s show included minimalist black & white artwork using found objects and appropriated imagery. The main piece of the show consisted of a installation of rubber car tires and casts of sharpened bamboo sticks. Meant to recreate and recontextualize the makeshift street barricades found in Thailand, the piece references ’60s installations and happenings, such as Allan Kaprow’s Yard. Preview / Setup: Thais Beltrame – “Gravity” @ Art Association of Jackson Hole

AM first encountered Brazilian artist Thais Beltrame’s wistful work a couple years ago at Carmichael Gallery. We are glad to see she’ll be returning to the States for a another show, this time at the Art Association of Jackson Hole in Wyoming. Entitled Gravity, the opening is set for January 14th with a workshop today for those interested. A couple more images after the jump…
