Teaser: Ray Caesar – “A Gentle Kind of Cruelty” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Besides his participation in the “In The Nursery” group show, Ray Caesar has some bigger things planned for January – namely his solo at Jonathan Levine Gallery. Unique in the scene as one of the rare artists who find success with utilizing the digital medium, Caesar’s newest body of work will be entitled “A Gentle Kind of Cruelty”. As you can see in the image above, his pale skinned beauties are not always what they seem.  See for yourself on January 22nd.

Broad Musuem Design Revealed

The much talked about Broad Museum finally has an architectural design. This honeycombed building with a projected cost of $130 million is the brainchild of Diller, Scofidio + Renfro, a New York-based firm, and will feature 114,000 square feet of space spread over three stories. We will be definitely be looking forward to checking this and Eli Broad’s collection out when it opens in downtown LA. Via La Times.

Update: James Jean – “Rebus” @ Martha Otero

We now have some more info to share with you after first bringing you news of a Los Angeles exhibition from James Jean (interviewed) the other day. Openings: Jean Labourdette (Turf One) – “The Rising” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Opening a several weeks ago alongside SHAG (covered) at Jonathan Levine Gallery was Jean Labourdette (Turf One). The self taught French-Canadian artist created a great show he named “The Rising”. Utilizing numerous found objects on which he painted on, Jean worked to create interactive pieces for the viewers. What we enjoyed in particular were the realistic subjects which which were effortlessly integrated into their respective backdrops. Check out the full show after the jump.

Releases: José Parlá – “Walls, Diaries, and Paintings” Book

Brooklyn-based artist José Parlá, who stopped the show with one of his magnificent street-inspired calligraphic works at OHWOW’s It Ain’t Fair exhibit (covered) during Art Basel Week last month, will be unveiling a new publication next month, entitled Walls, Diaries, and Paintings. All the work in the show, like this exquisite piece (seen above) from the master of the digital arts, will focus on the themes of childhood, birth, and nursery art. Paul Barnes brings his unique storytelling to Los Angeles this week in the form of his first LA solo show Happy Valley in Thinkspace’s project room. The Scottish artist uses a muted but warm colour palette within his work and the textured plaster backdrop applied to the board he paints on adds a beautiful and timeless depth to his playful compositions. Studio Visit: Eddie Colla, D Young V, and Shark Toof
