Openings: ROA – “New Works” @ White Walls

The White Walls gallery opened the doors to Belgium-based street artist, ROA’s first San Francisco solo exhibition Saturday night. Leading up to the show, information and images were shrouded in secrecy as ROA methodically put on the final touches up to the show’s opening (as evidenced by his hands covered in black paint). The show featured his signature array of finely detailed spray painted animals, sometimes in various stages of dissection and decay.  The work was done on found objects (such as metal panels, metal […]

Openings: D*Face – “Going Nowhere Fast” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Last night, one of the hottest spots in Culver City was the opening of D*Face’s (featured) show Going Nowhere Fast at the Corey Helford Gallery.  The next-level Lichtenstein inspired pieces combined with the sweet highly visible mural (covered) as well as his street intervention on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (covered) brought out his fans (new and old) in droves and led to brisk sales. The UK-based street artist did not disappoint with a well-rounded and versatile body of work including large-scale canvases, installation pieces, […]

Openings: “Martha Cooper : Remix” @ Carmichael Gallery

Saturday night, Martha Cooper (interviewed) launched a special group exhibition at LA’s Carmichael Gallery. If the upcoming Art In The Streets Exhibition at the MOCA is this year’s Superbowl for street & urban art, then consider this show the preceding playoffs. Many of the players in the monster retrospective made an appearance to pay homage to the godmother of street art photography. Cooper’s curated list of artists were asked to artistically reinterpret her iconic urban photographs and included AM favorites like Futura, Swoon, Jose Parla, […]

We have a big art night tonight in Culver City and one of the trifecta of shows is opening at the Carmichael Gallery. Seminal street art and graf photographer, Martha Cooper (interviewed), will be in town with an exhibition (Martha Cooper : Remix) she curated where artists were asked to reinterpret one of her many famous photographs.  Martha was gracious enough to send over several snaps she took of artists holding their piece side by side with their source of inspiration. Reminiscent of the Zombie Oscar Statues he installed in Runyon Canyon and in the parking lot of the famous Mel’s Drive-In in Hollywood in 2010, D*Face (featured) placed a custom tombstone early this morning at the Charlie Sheen star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Make sure you stop by on Saturday night at the Corey Helford Gallery to check out his new body of work entitled Going Nowhere Fast (for a preview, see our studio visit) and also to enjoy the mural he painted […]
