Openings: TIN – “Internal Clock” @ Last Rites

Earlier this month, alongside Laurie Lipton, another solo entitled Internal Clock was put on display from painter Tin (interviewed) This second showing with the New York gallery featured his world of human and animal subjects whose bodies have been intermingled with machinery creating bionic hybrids, although it looks as though half of the paintings don’t touch on this theme. While maintaining the sensual pin-up influence from his first career as a pinup artist, Tin continues to further explore his imagination with these newest pastel renderings. […]

Art Focus: Matthew Cox

This week, our Art Focus is on Philadelphia-based Matthew Cox, whose series of medical x-rays and embroidery recently caught our eyes. The Parsons and Otis trained artist has taken radiographs and stitched back in his imagined content partially over the skeletal elements leading to an intriguing new mesh of reality and the imaginary. For those interested, Embroidered X-Rays will be showing at the Packer/Schopf Gallery (Booth E-407) this year at PULSE in Miami, part of Art Basel Week. This particular series of works is just one […]

Openings: AJ Fosik – “Time Kills All Gods” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Opening along side Josh Keyes at Jonathan Levine was sculptural artist AJ Fosik. The show entitled Time Kills All Gods is a tour de force as AJ brings the hammer with this latest endeavor. We’ve long been impressed at his creative wood and metal workings that depict unique animals, but this time he ups the ante with a serious boost of imaginative mythical creatures while tackling the ideas of religion and the worship of false idols. Videos: Invader x VNA – “Paris 2011”

You may remember the special Invader screenprinted edition of the VNA magazine that we gave away here on AM a while back. Apparently, the Very Nearly Almost crew also produced a video while visiting with street artist in Paris where he gives them a little tour of what he has been working on as well as talks on camera on various things. Enjoy. Discuss Invader here.

Openings: Glenn Barr – “Faces & Small Epics” @ MondoPop

After showing at La Luz de Jesus in June, Glenn Barr has opened his next show, this time in Italy. Held at MondoPop in Rome, Faces & Small Epics is billed as the Detroit-based painter’s first European solo. From the looks of things, Barr brought with him some new paintings, drawings, and prints for this exhibition and you certainly want to stop by if you are in the area to check it out before it closes on December 3rd. More photos after the jump via […]

Previews: Max Snow – “Lock, Stock and Teardrops” @ DUVE Berlin

Opening tomorrow, October 29th, Max Snow will present a new body of work revolving around the theme of pain at DUVE Berlin in Germany. In a two-person exhibition alongside Ali Kepenek, Lock, Stock and Teardops focuses on portraits of individuals laden with scars, both literal and figurative. The New York-based artist’s signature black-and-white photographs, intimate and melancholic, are at times as uncomfortable as they are sublime. The exhibition runs through Saturday, December 10th. Check out a preview of some of the work after the jump.

Released in conjunction with Ai Weiwei’s photographic exhibition, currently running from October 15th 2011 to March 18th 2012 at Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, Ai Weiwei: New York 1983-1993 chronicles the ten year period spent by the then unknown Chinese immigrant living in a tiny apartment in the East Village. Personally curated by Ai himself, the 220 photos selected offer an […]

Openings: Osgemeos – “Fermata” @ Museu Vale (Brazil)

Words cannot begin to describe the wonderment and joy one feels when confronted by these photos of the new Osgemeos exhibition at the Museu Vale in Brazil. It seems the twins always seem to save their best for the museums in their home country (see Vertigo and Vertigem), as well they should. From the complex sculptural builds featuring intricate inclusions of various art items and paraphernalia, to the grand expansion of the well received multi-colored stripes seen in some of their recent work, to their […]

After alerting you to some RETNA activity down in Miami and then a subsequent update (ROA, Gaia, Nunca, HOW & NOSM, the Date Farmers, Faile, and Bast), it’s time for another look as Kenny Scharf, Interesni Kazki, and Saner & Sego have rolled into town and we have some new pieces from the Date Farmers and Vhils as well. More photos after the […]
