Openings: Laurie Lipton – “Carnival Of Death” @ Last Rites

Earlier this month, the Last Rites Gallery in New York continued their patronage of the dark arts with a solo exhibition from Laurie Lipton. In an interview with us leading up the show, the LA-based painter told us that Carnival of Death was inspired by the Day of the Dead Festival in Mexico as well as her experience with her mother’s death. Laurie’s description of her new body of work certainly rang true as we admired the detailed and intricate graphite pieces at the show […]

Openings: Ray Caesar – “A Dangerous Inclination” @ Corey Helford Gallery

This past Saturday night, Ray Caesar presented his newest solo show, A Dangerous Inclination, to the Culver City art crowd. Featuring new digital creations as well as some favorites from the past, the show at Corey Helford Gallery put his genius in finding beauty in the disturbing and grotesque on display, something he talked to AM about in an interview we conducted with him last week. More photos after the jump by Carlos Gonzalez.

Streets: Phlegm (Sheffield)

Now that Phlegm is back to his home city of Sheffield earlier than expected he has some time to work on some local walls like this new one he calls “the passage”. Also, he has used some of his extra moments to work on his new book (see the last release, the soldout Illuminated Alphabet) with several incredibly detailed new drawings. See these as well as a detailed look at the mural after the jump…

Baby Tattooville ’11: Goodie Bag

We still have a couple more things to cover before we close the book on this year’s Baby Tattooville. One of these is the much anticipated “goodie bag” that attendees to the annual art retreat receive at the end of the weekend. Besides the sweet Diesel Fuel print set and reproduction of the Art Jam painting, a collection of other limited editions, drawings, and art paraphernalia was given away just before the trip home. More detailed photos after the jump by Carlos Gonzalez.

Streets: World Roundup Oct 17 – 23

It’s time for another roundup of the new walls this week here on AM. Although not exactly immediately recent, this mural from Mesa in particular caught our eye. Other murals covered after the jump include C215 (Paris), Escif (France), Sam3 (Germany), Dabs Myla x Remi/Rough (London), Fintan Magee (Melbourne), Teo Doro (Valparaíso), Dimitris Taxis (Spain), and Isaac Cordal (Brussels).

A Ramellzee show at White Columns that we missed. More street action from David Choe & DVS-1 in Norway. Eric Elms has a show in Tokyo where he remixes the Kilroy character. New prints from MOMO (Fame Festival) and Junko Mizuno. A new comic from Brendan Monroe. Femke Hiemstra has work ready to ship (presumably for Roq La Rue). New work from […]

Openings: Josh Keyes – “Migration” @ Jonathan Levine

Tonight, Josh Keyes (interviewed) unveiled his latest body of work at New York’s Jonathan LeVine Gallery. As mentioned in our preview, this exhibition entitled Migration, explores the what if scenario of where ecological zones are crunched due to extreme changes in our climates. What type of odd behavior and patterns will emerge in the animal kingdom when food chain and bio-habitats reconfigure? Would pandas and bull sharks coexist peacefully? What about Grizzlies and Dingos? We were also delighted to see many awe inspiring JK favorites make a […]

Signings: James Jean – “Rebus” @ Reed Space

James Jean (featured) is in New York right now and will be making a special stop at Jeff Staple’s Reed Space to conduct a rare signing for his newly released Rebus Book tomorrow, October 23rd (5 – 7 pm). As seen at his recent signing at the LACMA, fans will be able to catch the talented artist’s work up close and get an opportunity to grab a signature. As an added bonus, James informed us that a special print will be released at the show […]

Releases: KAWS – “Joe Kaws” Vinyl Figure

Since the Dissected Milo set was released back in February, KAWS hasn’t released anything on the vinyl toy front, undoubtedly due to focusing on his fine art and recent solo Hold the Line. That will all change next week with the release of his Peanuts homage to Snoopy, aptly dubbed Joe KAWS. The figure, who’s release was effectively set in stone over a year ago with the release of an OriginalFake x Peanuts Joe KAWS t-shirt collaboration to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Charles Schulz […]

Openings: Curtis Kulig & Skullphone – “Scripture” @ Mallick Williams

Urban artists Curtis Kulig and Skullphone recently opened their exhibition Scripture in New York’s Mallick Williams & Co. Each artist, known well for their outdoor installations, created indoor works for this show. Skullphone continued his ultra precise dot paintings (previously covered) which mimic his LED panel installations which we have come to enjoy. Utilizing a meticulous painting process of altering the size of the paint, he is able to create a visual conceptualization of what he is trying to communicate. Next, upon entering Curtis’ space […]
