Openings: Matt Dangler – “Center Flame” @ Copro Gallery

A couple weekends ago, AM stopped by the Copro Gallery to check out the new paintings from Matt Dangler (interviewed). It has been awhile since we saw a large body of work from Matt (2009), so we were curious to see what Center Flame would reveal. Streets / Teaser: Andrew Schoultz & Richard Colman – “Destroyer” @ Cooper Cole

On June 1st, Andrew Schoultz and Richard Colman will once again open a joint show together since the last time in Copenhagen in March (covered). This time, the two friends and artists will be taking their paintings up north to Toronto for an exhibition at Cooper Cole collectively entitled Destroyer. Showing: Doze Green – “Luminosity in the Dark Rift” @ Jonathan LeVine

One of the artists displaying works alongside Eric White’s current showing (covered) is New York-born, Northern California-based artist Doze Green, in what is his fourth solo exhibition at Jonathan LeVine. Luminosity in the Dark Rift, features a series of mixed media works on canvas, panel, and paper all demonstrating his signature combinations of cubism, abstract lifeforms, and stylized letterforms leading to rich and complex compositions. Showing: Eric White – “Transmission” @ Jonathan LeVine

A couple weekends ago, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery hosted the opening for Eric White’s (interviewed) solo show – Transmission. For this new body of work, the talented New York-based artist continued to explore his interest in cinematic compositions, in particular scenes where automobiles are figured prominently. The detail in these pieces need to be seen in person to be fully appreciated as they are all beautifully rendered and elicit a sense of a bygone era in the annals of movie-making. Streets / Teaser: Vhils – “Diorama” @ Vera Cortês

As a followup to a piece he put up last week Alfama district of Lisbon, Vhils has also created a mural high above the city as well as in Aveiro (seen above). The recent increase in street activity in his home base is a precursor to the Portuguese artist’s show opening on June 1st at the Vera Cortês Art Agency entitled Diorama. Teaser: Aya Takano – “To Lose Is To Gain” @ Galerie Perrotin (Paris)

Coming up on June 23rd, Galerie Perrotin in Paris (Saint Claude location) will be opening To Lose Is To Gain, a new solo show from Aya Takano. The Japanese artist and former assistant to Murakami will be bringing her signature style of anime-influenced juxtaposition of natural forms in urban settings. Heavily influenced by her childhood readings of the natural sciences and science fiction, the work melds these interests with the techniques of the Superflat movement. Discuss Aya Takano here.

Openings: Augustine Kofie – “Working An Angle” @ Known Gallery

Over the weekend, Known Gallery presented a solo exhibition by artist Augustine Kofie (featured). Titled Working An Angle, this new collection of artwork continues to show the great craftsmanship and style that Kofie continues to perfect. This is the first solo showing for the artist since 2009’s Vintage Futurism (covered) and it also marks his first solo presentation at Known. Teaser: FAME Festival 2012

Good news for street art fans out there. One of our favorite events (see coverage for 2011, 2010, and 2009), FAME Festival, is happening again this year and the list again looks very interesting. Included currently are Ericailcane, Boris Hoppek, Conor Harrington, 108, Lucy McLauchlan, Moneyless, Nug, Giorgio di Palma, Akay, Brad Downey, Cyop & Kaf, Vhils, Paper Resistance, Dem, JR, and Momo. Streets: World Roundup (May 21 – May 27)

Leading off our summary of last week’s notable public art is this mural from Philippe Hérard (photo by morac19, via Juxtapoz). Utilizing a mixture of paint and newspapers, Hérard is able to create a whimsical piece for the streets of Paris. Teaser: “The Vertical Gallery” @ The Standard (DTLA)

This Thursday, May 31st, The Standard Hotel in Downtown LA will be unveiling The Vertical Gallery, a reference to their stairwell which has acted as canvas for a number of select artists.
