As we mentioned in our recent feature on Bäst’s collaboration with Greek olive oil brand Eléia, he has a show opening this week at the Opera Gallery in New York. Fans of one of Brooklyn’s best will have an opportunity to grab a bottle of their own (limited quantities) Thursday night (September 13th) at the private reception as well as take in the new body work – Germs Tropicana. Last Saturday night, besides new paintings from Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed), the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York also hosted the opening of Jeff Soto’s (interviewed) solo Decay and Overgrowth. AM stopped by LeBasse Projects in Culver City on Saturday to take in new paintings from Japanese artist Yumiko Kayukawa. Entitled HAKURYUU – White Dragon, the new body of work centered on themes that came about after the devastating earthquake that hit Japan in 2011. Through her work, Kayukawa explores personal coping mechanisms in the aftermath of an unforgettably painful event and hopes the white dragon will be an omen of good fortune for the future of Japan. Openings: Jessica Hess – “Fade and Finish” @ Spoke Art

Last Friday evening, Spoke Art hosted Jessica Hess’s latest exhibition, Fade and Finish. With this body of work, she explored using gouache on paper (as opposed to predominately oil on canvas paintings in previous exhibitions) and depicted urban landscapes in both daylight and moonlight. In this show, she also explored realistically depicting texture that is inspired by wheat pastes in New York, as well as pinup images that grew out of her love of vintage radio and movies. Streets: Os Gemeos & Aryz (Poland)

Most fans of street art have be following the creation online of the Os Gemeos and Aryz collaboration mural in Poland over the last several weeks. We now have a look at the completed wall (painted for the Urban Forms Gallery event in Lodz) as well as some progress pics. Steve “ESPO” Powers’ (featured) recently opened a solo show in New York for the first time in seven years and it was a doozy. Openings: Tomokazu Matsuyama – “New Work” @ Mark Moore Gallery

Just this last weekend, the NY-based Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) opened a new showing at the Mark Moore Gallery. Bringing with him several tondos as well as his irregularly shaped canvases, Matsu filled the project room with a juxtaposition of eastern and western imagery. Mixing things up, the new body of work also included two works on paper that he placed on a hand-painted wall as well as a re-cast of a 18th century erotic Chinese porcelain figure (customized for the Los Angeles area) that he encased in resin. Just a little update for the Bäst fans out there. The NY-based street artist has teamed up with Greek olive oil brand Eléia to create a special edition bottle available for purchase exclusively at Dean & Deluca. This screen-printed bottle was only produced in an edition of 500, and features Bäst’s signature style using iconic imagery.
