Brooklyn-based art duo The Yok and Sheryo are opening their solo exhibition at Krause Gallery in NYC tonight. After showing in Berlin, Tokyo, Sydney, Taipei, Beijing, Singapore Bangkok and Hong Kong, the Australian born artist and his partner in crime, Sheryo, are introducing their latest body of work in the city they’ve been living and working in last year. The duo known for their traveler lifestyle, numerous murals and street art pieces all over the globe, prepared a variety of different works for this show. Using different medias, techniques, while staying true to their illustrative, almost tattooish style, the artists are finding their inspiration in numerous sources from places they traveled to as well as recognizable elements of everyday street life in New York. This approach results in works that include various elements from countries far away, such as Chinese dragons, pipes, and geishas, and combines them with familiar elements of Western lifestyle such as street food, skateboarding culture, drinking, smoking, etc. The highlight of this show are ceramic works the couple worked on while traveling through Vietnam. Using the traditional way of painting the vases and plates, and even some traditional visual elements from that region, the two created a very unique body of work that feels both traditional and very hip at the same time. The combination of elements on these works has a pure narrative feel, and each piece tells a story about the rich life of the artists.
